what type of slugs is best to use threw smoothbore shotguns would i use rifled slugs? was going to pick up a box today then i thought i better find this out first.

Can-tire has a 15 pack of winchester rifled slugs. I have had good results with them. Walmart has (had?) federal "power shok" rifled slugs, I picked up a bunch of boxes at $3/box of 5. (clearance) These ones are very good.

The 'brenneke' slugs are generally considered to be excellent. Call your sporting goods store and ask what brands they carry loaded with them.

Federal Tru-balls are an improved Foster type. They're basically a Foster slug with a plastic ball in the cavity to help them keep form.

Whether or not it does anything is beyond me.

Brenneke slugs are more dependable than Foster type slugs because Brennekes are solid and Fosters are hollow. Both designs are intended to be front heavy, but while the Foster slugs achieve this with a cavity, Brenneke slugs use an attached cork wadding or something similar to shift the weight forward.

As a result, Brennekes are less likely to deform or fragment, which is good for tougher game where you're worried about the ability to penetrate. I hesitate to curse this thread by mention exactly what kind of animal that would be in North America, but I think you can all figure it out. ;)

Squirrels??

Maybe in the old days - but you try to use squirrels for ammo now (even if you can get 'em down the barrel behind a decent charge) and LISTEN to the animal rights guys whine.

Plus - accuracy is hit and miss and penetration is terrible. On the other hand, as a bear scare round it's great. Nothing like the sight of a compressed screaming squirrel hurtleing at you at 1800 fps to scare the bejeezuz out of a guy.

LOL great post, the visual of the screeming squirrel at 1800 fps was funny.

I can never get the things into my press when I am making loads.......and all the dam hair.....

Well there's a trick to it. The best way is to actually load a nut. Put some tape over the shotgun barrel. Then when you need to, open the barrel and when the squirrel is worming his way down to get the nut, point at the bear and fire.

Some people prefer to wait till the squirrel is on his way out before capping it. It all depends if you think seeing the terror stricken little demonic face flapping like dizzy gilespie from g-force and wind screaming at you like some soot-blackened demon from hell is more scary, or if you think the sight of a high-velocity varmint's butt end crapping itself as it closes on you is more off-putting.

Bit of a toss up in my mind personally.

Probably just as effective either way but if we didn't like arguing about the little details, we wouldn't be gunnutz.
