I want to pick the collective brains here on details in regards to a 22 for the kids.

My daughters is 7 going onto 14 (so it seems) and wants to shoot my 22. Problem is that the lenght of pull is too long for her.

I am looking to buy a 22 for her. I was thinking about a break action 22 with iron sights. I figure these should be relatively safe. If it is getting moved around, it is easy to see it is open and safe, and it's one shot at a time. What kind of inexpensive break action 22 are out there? Are they accurate and reliable? It's no use having a gun that can't hit a pop can.

Also, what are the min dimension in regards to barrel length and overall lenght? I would be probably lookin to cut it down to fit her better.

and finally one last question,...anybody got a lead where I may find one?

thks

min-Henry small 22cal bolt action signle shot there a nother one called cricket also a signle shot bolt 22cal . I think Epp's has them

I was given a cooey model 750 .22 when I was 12 and it was an excellent rifle. The single action bolt is rather hard to pullback however my Dad said if I was big enough to pull the bolt back, I was old enough to shoot it. I pulled that bolt back in no time at all. It might be incentive to your daughter to reach at little bit i order to have her own rifle. Kudo's to you for having a daughter who wants to enjoy the sport with you !!!

you pay the shipping and I will send a Cooey 750 to you for your child. It has a 12 1/2 " pull and can be cut back to fit her. I did this for my 2 kids and then added recoil pads as they grew. the guns are still being used by a Cub Scout troop range. It has been drilled for a scope apparently, but the holes do not hamper the action.

I cut bbl and stock down on a cooey 39. Kids shot it fixed in a rest since they were around 3, and can shoulder it by about age 7-8.

I help run a boy scout progarm and have noticed that the ked will keep coming back if you give them something that is easy for them to do well with.
I use a 10-22 with a short stock and a scope.

I have 3 stocks for my cooey, one is the original though. The other 2 I plan to cut down for my kids (3 boys + 1 girl). My grandfather bought it for my dad to learn on or it was his first rifle, anyway all of my kids are learning on it. The 2 oldest already like it (the oldest is 4). I basically hold it for them and they pull the trigger.

good times

If you decide to cut the stock down to fit, I learned a trick when doing it for my daughter years ago. Remove the butt plate and drill two holes below the butt plate screws. if you are going to remove 2" drill your holes at least 3". Then put masking tape around the stock where you are going to cut to prevent splintering. when the child grows you can replace what you took off with dowel rods and glue and can hardly tell it was ever cut off.

I went with the Cricket, a bit pricey but there is a lot to be said about having a gun that feels right to a kid. My son has been shooting it since he was 4, now at 5 he effortlessly holds it by himself and shoots quite accurately.
Again, a bit pricey for a little gun, but it is a pretty important stepping stone.

CZ scout

Not sure what you are talking for a price range, but I bought my son a CZ Scout. It is the perfect size for kids and comes with a single shot adapter. This adapter is removable and can be replaced with a 5 or 10 shot clip when they get a little older. It is a very accurate little gun and even I enjoy shooting it although it is small for me. JMO.

Out of Winnipeg Toymaker generosity, it looks like I am getting a Cooey 750.

Thank you very much!!

I was looking for a break action gun, his offer was too good to refuse.

Now what is the minimal length I need to keep this gun at to stay out of the big house? Is it 26".

Last year i picked up a little .22 for my two boys aged 5 and 7 from my local sports store. Its made by the Rogue rifle company in Lewiston Idaho called a chipmunk. It shoots short, long and long rifle. Rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. Its a single shot pull back bolt 30'' long overall. I think I payed around $100 for it. would get you away from cutting stocks.

Henry Mini Bolt all the way! Not a break open, but plenty safe and lots of great features. Check it out on the website for Henry Repeating Arms.
Cost about $220 at SIR, Wholesale Sports, etc.
A truly excellent design.
