I'm looking for a small rifle/tool case that can fit a 14.5" AR upper and the lower below it. What would you guys recommend?

Plano makes a rigid 36" takedown case. I'm tempted to get one.

5.11 Covert M4 bag is what I use. My 14.5" just fits with the stock full collapsed. I love it. Bought mine at Urban Tactical in Brantford just down the road from you.

That 5.11 case looks pretty nice and casual too! but a little pricy for a soft case IMO.

Been doing some research and considering something like is:

It is pricey for sure. I wanted something that was just the right size without having to break the AR down and that was, as you said, "casual". ;)
The sling is also a nice feature, especially when loading up my truck...I can easily throw the case over my one shoulder and still have my hands free for my range bag, ammo bag, etc. and make one trip instead of two.

Hey IM_Lugger,

To be honest, even as a gun owner, it is not really that obvious that it is a gun case. The 28" X 12" just dosen't make your mind think it's a gun case. Almost could pass for an odd sized laptop case.

I just noticed you are located in Hamilton. I live close to you, near the Hamilton airport, if you want to check it out, we could probably meet up somewhere convenient so you can see it in person.

Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

I just had an idea! For something completely different, which would not be obvious, would fit an upper and lower, plus accessories:

Add some foam and a small pad lock and you'd be good to go.

This is what I use, it is from Galati gear. It is 22" with a divider for 2 guns , and a front pocket that has Velcro on it for mags or shotshells. It is pricey, and on stuff like this shipping kills. Also now you also have to figure in a 13% exchange rate. That is a 10.5 upper, so you better measure total length of yours. The other one that has nice cases are SERT, sold by Rampart (a site sponsor) and they have flat rate shipping. Others have used a red metal toolbox from Can Tire and put foam in it and carry their gun stacked double decker style

I have a Bosch hammer drill case I have been saving for such a project. My plan is to cut out/down the existing dividers. Then I think I will fill it with expansion foam, and close it with a garbage bag in the middle. Put it on a flat surface with a flat plank of wood and a weight on top until it sets up. After trimming excess I want to cut out shape of either my short shottie or my AR.

I am up in the air as how to treat the cut out spray foam after shaping..? Fur (lol).. fabric? ... rubberized spray undercoat? GLH hair in a can? Anyone ever try to coat spray foam? I am thinking a bunch of sealer primer first...

:)

here is a pic of the case

Look on IRUNGUNS. I beleive I saw a case on there that looked like a large pistol case that would hold a 16" barreled upper and lower in it. I "THINK" i saw it there. I'll look again and see if i can find a link, cause i was literally looking at it last night.

Are any of these cases lockable? Since the AR is restricted they need to be in a lockable case. This is the one criterion that keeps tripping me up whenever I look for a compact case.

I'm using the 34" UTG Alpha Battle Carrier for my Tavor...but there's also a 30" version. Gotmine from Amazon.

Almost all cases have some form of "locking" them to fulfill the requirement, as you can lock the two zipper pull ends together. Which of course is another one of our misguided Canadian gun rules.

Put a smalee (read cheap) luggage lock, you know one of those little ones you can break with little effort, and somehow it's OK!

Even my Plano or any other of the hard gun cases with built in "locks" are a joke, how difficult do you think it would it be to open one of them up without a key?
