Small Arms and the soldier..

Things keep going the way they are going when you Join the Canadian Army they will say BYOM...Bring Your Own Musket.

I knew there was a reason the Firearms Safety manual included Muzzle loaders. 8)

i vote portable automatic grenade launchers for everyone. and in case you are somewhere with teh possibility of collateral, use 40mm ball

The future system should be designed to fight future wars....

Iran, China, Syria, North Korea, EU army( ).....mechanized infantry and armour all over again.

Any war with China better be nuclear or we will LOSE. Their manpower and manufacturing capabilities FAR exceed anything the west can muster.

A shooting war with North Korea or the <snicker> "EU army" would probably also go nuclear pretty quick as both places have elements within their countries who would have no moral problem directing a nuke towards Washington.

A war with Iran or Syria would just be "Gulf War III" IMHO.

As for the M14, its role in Iraq as I understand it is a sort of "1 or 2 per platoon" deal. The idea is to have a long range engagement weapon system available as a SECONDARY platform in case targets (think Dragunovs and 8mm's) need to be engaged out past the 300 meter effective range of the ubiquitous M4 carbine that most front line ground troops are now using, the M16A1 through A4 having been generally relegated to support troop roles in many instances. As I understand it the rifle is not as utilitarian as the carbine in urban warfare and is harder to use when wearing body armor.

I suspect that alot of the "re-equip the army with a new rifle and cartridge" buzz we're hearing will quickly fade in the face of mounting war costs and the adoption of the new AR based 7.62 DMR platform being developped to supplant the M14.

5.56, 7.62X51, 30,06,303 BRITISH,7.62x39,7.62x54r,8x57,9mm luger, 45acp,7.62x25 will kill you just as dead as anything else, why do the militaries of the world continue to piss away every dollar they can to replace stuff that already works? Honestly was there any real need to replace the 1911? You show up with with a bullpup & a guy with a 1903 spingfield will snipe you from a hillside. How does that go again? oh yeah, "Its not the pipes ladie, it the piper"

And when you meet that guy with the springfield in the city, he'll snag up on a something while you quickly put three rounds in him.

Soldiers fight in an extreme range of conditions and with a great variety of style. No one modern rifle can fit the ball in every situation. It all comes down to different tools for different jobs.

True, but his buddy was carring an ak47 or ppsh & covered him & did not have to spend $750 000 in r&d on new weapons & requiping an entire army. I am not saying one tool will do it all, but we have more than enough tools to do it & not bankrupt the nation. Maybe instaed of melting down sadams arsenal we could put it to better use? :D

I agree...much better IMHO to refit, and fix up the confiscated Iraq, and A-stan weapons, and ammo, and hand them out to our Military. What a waste to hack the stuff up...esp' with our militarys money issues.

AKs would work great in our Climate. :D

I am sure that the US government wouldnt hack those models up but instead would rather sell them in Africa and still make a small profit or a guarantee of sole oil sales

The 5.56x45mm is a fine round. The problem lies in the yanks yearning for shorter barrels which deny the round the velocity to perform to its full potential. The canadian army is wise to keep the 20 inch barrel in its C7 midlife upgrade.

I'd post some pics if I knew how.

We are not fighting on the plains of Europe -- the 20" bbl adds aprox 40m to the fragmentation rnage of C77 ball over the 16" barrel on the C8SFW/FTHB.

The Infantry are being re-equipped with the C8FTHB's as quickly as the LCMM and others can find funds.

Really? That's great news. How long before system wide implementation?
