Why do manufacturers assume that if you want a rifle in 223 or 22/250, that you also would like a heavy and or long "varmint" barrel? Personally I would prefer a varmint rifle of 6 pounds or so. When I grab something out of the cabinet it is usually a lightweight. The heavy stuff just kind of sits there.

Not all small bores have heeavy barrels.
Anschutz, Cooper, Savage ,for example all build lightweight "walking" varminters.

Simple solution would be to get a Stevens 200 in .223 or .22-250...

Fits the bill for a lighter rifle with a lighter barrel in a small cabliber.

Or get your own done up....

Rem Model 7 with 24" Rem 700 .223 barrel installed...

I think there is a big demand for the heavy weight varmint rifles, but there are definitely those who prefer a standard weight barrel. I had no problem finding a Ruger 77 223 in standard weight barrel and its a good shooter. Like you say, some of us want rifles that are more conducive to carrying out in the field.

My Sako A1 223 even with a laminated stock and a 4x12 |Nikon scope weigh around 8.5 lbs all up. It will first break the clay pidgeons at 300 metres and then break the pieces of clays after that. Plus it looks great.

I've been considering a blued steel Tikka T3 Deluxe Hunter in .223...it looks really nice and has beautiful wood. What do you guys think of these...are they usually good shooters?

Hell I've been thinking the opposite. I wish the Stevens 200 came in a heavy barrel. I'd buy one right now if it did.

I love my heavy barrel Ruger .204 with a tripod although lugging it around could be troublesome.

Amen to that. I love my heavy barrelled SPS in .204

I can definately see how a lighter barrel and lighter rig would benefit on a day with a lot of walking. My Tikka T3 in .223 has a nice weight to it and I can carry it all day.

My 7mm mag T3 is a light one. Need a limbsaver though lol
