small game and yotes

First off the .270 is fine because while the bullets are .277 the regulation specifies the bore of the rifle which is measured land to land and is less than .275.

If you are hunting coyotes avoid the rimfires. The .17HMR or .22 aren't enough to reliably take them down.

I live in a rural area of Southern Ontario and am within the region requiring the .275 limitation. I use a 12 gauge shotgun, .223 and a .270. I'd be just as happy with any caliber in between those two. I'd also consider a .22 Hornet if ranges were no further than 200 yards.

I've owned a 6PPC and it's an outstanding cartridge but one that requires reloading. As noted above the .243 would be a better choice. If I didn't have the .223 and .270 already I'd have a .243.

Thank you all for the information. I greatly appreciate the input. I have started to reload and im hoping that that would help keep the costs down. Its good to hear more opinions , that why I can get different angels.

Thank you.

It's not all of Southern Ontario that has the idiotic calibre law. It's just some counties. Said counties are listed in the hunting regs. In any case, the .270, with the right bullet, will be fine for coyotes and ground hogs, but it's too much for small game like rabbits and squirrels.
The noise doesn't matter. Few people can tell the difference between one cartridge's bang and another. If the bang of a .270 is too loud for the neighbours, any centrefire will be too.

Somebody mentioned the Stevens 200 in .22/250. I did some tweeking on one of them this summer for my niegbour and I can tell you that is one #### of a lot of coyote rifle in a very afordable package. Plain Jane work horse that rifle is with a crisp trigger at 2lbs. Apearance wise it is a piece of junk but it is just sickenly acurate;).
I too live in SW Ontario and I have no need for a .270. Where the caliber restriction is in place there is no rifle deer season anyway. We are restricted to M/L or shotgun. I just finished killing my 38th M/L whitetail. Our rural areas are highly populated and that is why we don't let the SKS and get the biggest magnum newly on the market guys lose in the woods. Aint a coyote ever born that can't be killed cleanly with a .22 centerfire;)

i guess the 5 that ive put down with my 17hmr didnt know that;) the first one i used a hornady vmax and put it behind its shoulder at about 80 yards. went through a rib and blew into a bunch of small pieces and only 1 small piece went into the opposite lung. he didnt go far as the lung i hit was mangled. ever since then its been headshots only out to 125 yards with 20gr hollow points and it works great for me.

its almost time to get out for them critters again :50cal:

I just added a 22-250 to my line up.

I was using a 25-06 but decided I needed another gun :D and everyone was talking about their new stevens, so I gave in to the CGN peer preasure and bought one :D

so now I have a rifle for yotes one for deer and a 300WM for moose

and several other rifles in various calibers for shooting enjoyment

I've killed one coyote with the 17hmr and my cousin has also. 90 yards and 75 yards to the skull dropped them both on the spot. My cousin has also wounded atleast 5, He's popped them in the head, neck area and they drop and roll for a bit, jump up and run and we never find them. 17HMR is NOT sufficient for a coyote. Hell i could likely kill one with a pellet gun if he was close enough and i got him in the eyeball, its just not ethical.

i guess the magical bullets i use give me an edge ;) if you hit smack a yote behind the ear with a 17hmr hollow point its going down and with a gun that shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards its not that hard if you wait for a good shot. it all comes down to what the individual is comfortable using.
