Hey there everyone , i had a question and i searched small game and gopher in seperate but didnt find what i was looking for .

I have the 2010 hunting regulations book from CT , as im looking to go deer hunting in the fall . I understand what laws and stuff i need to follow for hunting deer and the like however a new opportunity opened up today .

I asked the bosses daughter afterwork how much farm land they have to themselves and she told me 500 Acres . she then asked why did i want to know , i asked if they had a gopher/groundhog problem and she said yes , they were everywhere and becoming a very VERY big issue. I asked i could come out and have free range and shes almost 100% certain i can have this area all to myself to Konk over as many gophers i want .

My question is , i know you need to do hunters safety to get your big game license , but what about small game ? i dont see anything in the hunting regulations regarding gopher , i only see Rabbit and coyote .

Help ? lol , im excited.

if you have your small games you should be good to go as far as i know. There's no closed seson for the dirt pigs . if all fails call the C O and ask about the area you are going to be hunting. He/she will fill you in also check with the town ship to i just found out that where i grew up your not aloud to use center fire rifles or rim fire . Muzzle loaders and shoguns thats it .Thats a town bylaw not the minstry so you might just want to look in to that too. Hope this helps

Hunter safety course: Yes, you need it before you can get ANY licence.

Small Game Licence: Yes, you need it. $21

Gophers: No, they are groundhogs...open all year, no bag limit.

Better find a safety course NOW, if you plan to hunt this fall.

Good luck.

sorry i miss read what you wher asking once you have your hunter safty you just buy the small games licens along with your deer tags you have to apply for your antlerles its a draw but once you have your small games then your good to go

If I understand the OP, he is most likely looking to take his hunter safety course prior to the start of big game season, but doesn't have it yet? Unless I'm misunderstanding his post, he's wondering if he can go shoot gophers on private land without first taking the course he plans on taking later this year? Don't know Ontario regs though so can't offer input, just my interpretation of the question.

Thats how I read it........I don't know about Ontario but here in Quebec you need a small game permit, that you can only buy if you pass the hunter safety course.....

X2 for Ontario; legally you need a small game licence to hunt groundhogs and such, so needs to pass the Hunter Safety Course first.

And sorry if this is just another spin on the same question but the property that ill be allowed to shoot on is private property not crown land . so if this person allows me onto their property you still need that license .

Whats the difference between them getting rid of varmint or me ?

Also , ive passed both my pal and rpal courses , is the exam much different for the hunters safety than the non restricted exam ? like if i were to challenge the exam would i have enough information to pass ?

Hunting is hunting; the property owners can be charged even if shooting pests on their private property; farmers even need a special deer licence to rid them off their property. Property owners do not have "carte blanche" to shoot anything on their property; it's not a matter of crown or private property. Even if you act as "an agent" to rid groundhogs off their property you still need the necessary small game licence. You, and the propery owner can always risk it without the correct licence but you are risking severe charges if caught. Why risk it?
