Our deer week was cancelled so I have booked a solo trip up to Kirkland Lake for some small game, staying at a lodge just west of the town. First week of November. How is the hunting in this area, any tips? Hoping to get into some Grouse and Rabbits. I was in this area about 12 years ago for moose and remember it being prime for small game. Also wondering about packing the .223 for some practice, any good areas for shooting at distance? Any advice would be appreciated. Restaurants? Stores?

Head up the cut roads North of the airport, past Nettie Lake... lots of good grouse country up there... you will pass a few sand pits where you can shoot to 300 yards.

Lots of rabbits this year, haven't seen too many partridge.

As for restaurants, there's a Chinese place on the south side of 11 in matheson that's pretty good. Their home made hot sauce is awesome!

Butler lake is closed down, from Kirkland I would drive down highway 672 and just drive down all the bush roads, I'm from Matheson and I've spent a lot of time in the highway 672 and highway 101 area when we had moose tags in WMU 28. Now we are forced to hunt another unit. Any road off of 101 from Munro lake to the border and any road on 672 from 101 to the park would be worth a peek.

The bush roads along the Matachewan highway are great for grouse, and a lot of bear. Look for blueberry patches and mountain ash berries. As far as grouse, you will see a lot of ruffed and spruce hens. You should be able to pick off some rabbits at sunset along the gravel roads.
