Small game mouse fart bullets

This is a bit off topic but I have used 22 caliber, skirted pellets in my 22 hornet, using a magnum primer as the only propellant for clearing rats/gophers out of a barn.

I had to single load them as they wouldn't feed from the rotary magazine on my Ruger 77/R but they were accurate enough at ten yards or so and if they hit anything else, they didn't do any serious damage after passing through. Way less energy than any 22rimfire round, including CB caps but enough at close range to effectively put down a rat or gopher very quickly.

Even cleaned out a bunch of pigeons with this combination.

At the price of primers though, it's not going to happen again.

Trailboss in a .243 is pretty neat. Recoils and sounds like a 22 magnum. Sorry no experience with 7-08 though.

Anyone try W231 for reduced loads? I need to pick some up for my 38S&W, figured I could kill two birds with one stone if its suitable for reduced loads.

Alternatively, what about one of the following: Titegroup, CFE Pistol, Accurate #9, Winchester 572, H110, HS-6, or Lil'Gun?

I second the Hammond game getter. It’s easy in a .30 cal bore load a bullet made for a .32 pistol with a charge of unique or red dot and see where it hit a closer ranges.

If I didn't reload I would absolutely go the gamegetter route. But seeing that I reload, it just seems like the better option is to reload something because then I can have a pocket full of grouse loads rather than one game getter that I need to eject and reload manually. More often than not when I see grouse it's more then one, so the ability to quickly follow up is preferred.

For $100 or so you could buy 2 gamegetter's new and run them cheap with no powder and construction .22 blanks.
I think Rob is in Van so maybe you can try the one he is offering to see if you like it?

I run 7grs of 800x behind 115gr cast 303. Lee has a 130gr mold. I would guess someone on here casts with it. Shouldn't be hard to get a small bag full to test.

Yes I have used lots of w231 in 303 British cases with cast bullets ranging from 78gr to 220gr

My favorite is tightgroup for cast bullets plinkers.

(Hodgdon reloading online even lists a load of 8gr of tightgroup in a 308 case with a 170gr jacketed bullet for 1000fps)

I like w231 and tightgroup for plinking and h4895 and imr3031 for mid/max loads with cast bullets, the h4885 and irm3031 also work well with jacketed bullets too.

Tightgroup and w231 are pretty similar I use 3-8gr with cast bullets of any weight.

No filler at all and I use magnum primers. Although I'm sure lrp would work fine

I have fired lots and lots of various weight cast bullets in different calibers, using mostly 700X and some Unique. Other powders work - Red Dot, etc. Flake powders tend to ignite easier. I acquired a big jug of Universal **Not sure which version, powder is not with me right now** and have loaded some of my blown out .303 British cases to shoot in my LE "410" musket. This one is still in the original Indian chambering and won't chamber normal .410 ammo. I had plans to take this one out to a gopher field this summer, but there was a shortage of gophers around here, so "next year". I load two .395 cast balls that I flatten and run through a .410 Lee sizer die.

Just a heads up with some 22 and 32 cal construction blanks, many of them use corrosive propellants and you really need to clean your bore properly after using them. Ask me how I know.

I have a Hammond Game Getter for 30-06 and another for 338-06.

When I received them from Brian, I went to the local hardware store and picked up some 22 and 32cal blanks used for construction. Came in 50 count containers.

I wanted to try the 22 cal blanks in the 30-06 and thought I might need a bit more push with the 338-06 because of ball weight and barrel volume.

I took them to the range to see where my rifles shot them, then took the rifles home and put them in the safe for a couple of days.

When I came back to them, both barrels had fine rust from the throat to the muzzles.

I spoke with a few others about this and depending on which blanks you use, this is an issue.

The blanks that come from Hilti seem to be OK but I haven't been willing to use them and not clean for corrosive properly right away.

Never seen .32 cal blanks and Hammond game getters are all .22 blanks offset as far as I know. The blanks are made by a few different companies. Head stamps I have seen include winchester(in a Remington box) Cci and a few others. Never had an issue with corrosion and I am pretty sure these are just made from casings that were rejected for one reason or another.

Less BS to simply load the parent case with .32 cast or .32 ACP bullet with pistol powder underneath.

Then a game getter not really. Game getters use the .22 nail gun blanks so you are not eating your primer/powder stash and use buckshot pellets a 5lb box would last a long time. They have a neat little container that contains everything needed other than the blanks for a start. theirs also things like .32 acp to several .30 cal rifle adapters and if you got a mosin you can get a 7.62x25 adapter for it.

That makes sense, thanks.

Good luck getting the 7.62x25 adapter out of the chamber after it's fired and a chicken hit anywhere but the head or neck is toast at those velocities. 800fps with a pistol bullet is far less destructive and loaded rds are loaded so no juggling while trying to load and keep an eye on aflock of running chickens. I own a Hammond game getter that cracked. The original design was superior to the latter. Two partners split and had differing design ideas. Used mine to finish big game as well.
