Small Hole Upper to fit Large Hole Lower?

Just wondering if anyone ever just drilled the Small Hole Upper to fit the Large Hole Lower? A friend who still has an AR15 asked me today, I remember a conversion pin from Brownells but thats years ago.

Apparently people have tried it, and they end up cracking.

Offset pin or change the upper receiver to a large hole.

I tried to order a stripped Daniel Defense upper with the larger take down pin for my Colt lower. DD has discontinued them. Looks like the pin conversion kit is the only option now.

Why not go the other way....A "GOOD" gunsmith could convert your large pin lower to small pin by bushing the existing holes and drilling/reaming to proper size. A ball retension pin is usually used with these conversions. However, if you consider your lower to be "collectable" in some way then the offset large hole lower to small hole upper pin set would be the best bet. They are still around but not common.

Just find a DPMS offset pin to get a small hole upper to large hole lower

They are cheap...about $5 ( it will cost you more in shipping and probably won't make minimum order at most places )

I have used the DPMS ones and they work just fine . I have also used the DPMS bushing that allows you to fit large hole upper onto std lower

I've done one the other way around (large hole upper on a new small hole lower) the upper I first just plugged the hole with metal putty and matched up lower receiver and drilled it out. Worked perfect for 500 rounds or so, no failures until I sold it. If I still had it I would have the hole welded or brazed and Drilled it out for a permanent solution. Don't know if that would work with your situation. depends if there is enough metal around the hole to have it drilled out or not, or if more can be added.
