Hi All.

Looking for suggestions on a small light weight 22.
Other then a Little badger.

Youth rifles will be far to short for me to use.

This would be for when hiking and taking the occasional rabbit or other small game.

SA-22 is my choice, light kinda classy too. Maybe a 10-22? If you like a bolt, folks see to like the new tikka, but I've never shot one.

Thompson Hot Shot comes with a stock extension that makes it suitable for an adult to use. I put a red dot on mine and quite like it. LOP is 13" and the weight is about 1500g with the red dot.

I bought the kids a CZ 452 Scout during a Christmas Sale 10 years ago, my wingspan is over 6 1/2' and I use if for pests quite often.

An easy recommendation is a Cooey 39. They're less than 5 lbs, have adult dimensions, and are dirt cheap.

That SA22 opinion shared earlier would be worth looking into, too.

Since it hasn't been suggested yet, my vote would go to the Ruger take down but if you want a bolt action I'd say a CZ 455 SS stainless with synthetic stock. They are very affordable right now as vendors are making room for the 457 line-up. Good luck!

Depends on what you want to do with it. Semi-auto or bolt? Hunting or target? Backpack rifle? Varmint?

I have a couple of Remington 597s. One's a standard synthetic grey stock/Remington branded 3-9 scope model and I'm shocked how good it is. Did an MCarbo trigger spring job, and that's it. Shoots straight, dead-nuts accurate, super reliable, no cycling problems, eats CCI Mini Mags all day long and is just super fun and cheap to use.

Also just picked up the Remington 597 Heavy Barrel version. Also did the MCarbo trigger spring kit, but don't have an optic yet on it. Can't attest to the accuracy, but it cycled perfectly when using the factory 10-round mags. The 30-rounders? Not so much.

I seriously suggest to everyone you look at either a Marlin 795 or a Remington 597. Both great little rifles.

Mr. Ted

Depends how light you want to go. If you don't mind carrying 4-5lbs then you've got plenty of options. Marlin 795 w/tech sights is what I'd use currently, although I'm looking to get a Wildcat to try out, they're more left hand friendly than the 795 and I've heard good things about them.

If you want SUPER light, have you heard of the Pack Rifle?

Now that is a cool rifle.
Bit more then I am looking to spend though.

you said no youth rifles, but I would consider a savage rascal with a 3d printed stock extension or slip on extension or something. These rifles are super lightweight (2.7 lb or so) and have a decent barrel and tigger.

I have a Rascal, and the butt is really small not just a short LOP - I have a slip on pad that I use on my Enfield and sks just to increase the LOP on them and it does not fit my Rascal at all. I can make it fit by wrapping the butt in a tensor bandage, but I wouldn't want to strap it to my pack like that.

I bought the Rascal for my kids, but also kinda hoped to make use of it big game hunting due to the fact that it weighs less than a Little Badger, but I'll need to figure out a solution to the LOP still.

OP what is your reason for not wanting a little badger?
