Small light weight 22 rifle

An easy recommendation is a Cooey 39. They're less than 5 lbs, have adult dimensions, and are dirt cheap.

That SA22 opinion shared earlier would be worth looking into, too.

What's your definition of "dirt cheap"?

I have a Rascal, and the butt is really small not just a short LOP - I have a slip on pad that I use on my Enfield and sks just to increase the LOP on them and it does not fit my Rascal at all. I can make it fit by wrapping the butt in a tensor bandage, but I wouldn't want to strap it to my pack like that.

I bought the Rascal for my kids, but also kinda hoped to make use of it big game hunting due to the fact that it weighs less than a Little Badger, but I'll need to figure out a solution to the LOP still.


OP what is your reason for not wanting a little badger?

A small butt is not such a big problem, not that you need to spread out the recoil over a bigger surface

3.25 pounds, reliable semi auto with an adult size stock. I had mine cerekoted and added Williams fire sights. Great light pack along rifle, and easy to store taken down.

Marlin 795 is what I’d pick, not the lightest but it’s not heavy in the hands either. Always hear good things about them being a nice shooting semi. Mags are the same as the xt22’s which I already have a few of.

Hard to beat a Ruger 10/22 in the lightweight .22LR role, especially the take-down model with a short barrel. Here's my 10/22 TakeDown in a Magpul Backpacker Stock system with a Dlask 9" Carbon-Fibre-Tensioned Barrel and a few custom do-dads:

a home job but under 2 pounds, semi auto, 7+1, 27" oal and 12.25" lop
it has 7 rounds in the mag in the pic. (none in the chamber as its my kitchen lol but still under 2 pounds fully loaded)

Without a doubt my favourite 22 rimfire is a Marlin Papose. I would strongly suggest checking it out.

Of the light weights I’ve had the #1 is the Browning SS takedown, next the Marlin Papose. Not just light but accurate enough for grouse and gopher.

You guys in Ontario can small game hunt with a pellet pistol , this would be my first choice if allowed here in bc

This would be for when hiking and taking the occasional rabbit or other small game.

If you're not looking to impress your friends with a 22 that shoots a 1/2" group @ 50 yds.
My vote would be any TD version which would be best for hiking.
Be it the Savage 64F TD sa.

Or the Ruger 10/22 TD sa.

Both can be found with/without a bag/case.
I'm sure there are others as well.

T/CR22 for me. Come with decent open sights and a machined rail, handy and moves well also good to clean and maintain as well.
