Small pistol primer and 357MAG ??

I cant find any small pistol magnum primer anywhere in the mMontreal area.
The primer hunt season is still open.

Can I use small pistol primer with 357 Mag loads ?
any one ever experience it , my revolver is a 686-4.

The range is outside and Im freezing my balls picking it pistol brass in the snow , I want to shoot my good ol grand pa's gun and dont have to worry about losing brass

shouldn't be a big deal. I have done the same in my GP100. I pretty much use magnum and standard primers interchangeably since the primer shortage started. Have bought a few thousand standard in the last couple weeks, and just buy whatever I can find.

I only use small pistol primer in my .357 mag loads. I think you only need magnum primer with very hot loads or with very slow burning powders. Someone can correct me if i'm wrong.

Use small rifle instead..Works exceptionally well, especially with ball powders where it is reccommended

.357 Mag uses regular "Small Pistol Primer" and not magnum primers according to Lee reloading manual.

All I have ever used in the 357 is standard, small pistol primers.
I can see no reason, whatsoever, for magnum primers in any pistol calibre, including, of course, the 44 magnum.

If you were loading the heavyweight bullets with slow burning powder, you'd see a benefit to using the hotter, thicker primers.

Otherwise there is no real benefit.

My hodgdon manual state SPM mag primer , I guess Ill just give it a try with regular SP. I have some Titegroup and W231 . Titegroup burn faster so it will probly work better then 231. I got a box of Lead base Wadcutter 148gr all manual state little powder with these bullet so the small pistol primer souldnt be a issue

Depends on the powder. H110 lights with both Small Pistol and Small Rifle. No need to buy "Magnum" primers.

Titegroup and W231/HP38 also light well with SP primers.

If you are using something else, you might need a SMP but try it with a SP first and it would probably work ok for you.

Sorry, didn't see your last post...Since you are using Titegroup and W231 with a 148gr WC, it is a target load so just use regular SP primers. There is nothing "Magnum" about those bullets/load, except the case.

Titegroup and W231 aren't going to make much difference at the loads for a 148gr WC. Titegroup is a bit cleaner than W231 and being a revolver, less powder residue on your hands, too.
