Small primers, bigger cartridges?

While the large rifle primer draught continues, the small rifle primed 6.5 CM, 308 Win etc cases start looking more and more interesting. Figure as a range load, no worries with regular small rifle primers. But for you guys who use them, is correct to assume it calls for a magnum primer if used for hunting? Especially with enough ball powder?

say, a 556 Nato primer if SRM is unavailable? (if ones rifle reliably sets them off)

Sorry if is a bit too afield for the "hunting and sporting ARMS" section, but we do hunt with those arms after all ;)

How many lr or Lrm do you need the shortage is not that severer that it's not possible to buy 100 primers or even a 1000

Let me know where I can order em and I won't need any ;) Someone actually has stock?

Sure lemme go check with the bank about a loan :)

With the price some guys are asking maybe I'd take 20 in an envelope. Perhaps I missed something more reasonable?

As for the guy selling 800 primers for $200.00 in the EE...lets just say IO hope he chokes on them along with the others asking outrageous amounts.
There are others asking stupid monies either to attempt to supplement their income or thought they could turn a fast $$ or two.

Hey FLHTCUI,

Aye, there's lots of small rifle primers available now thankfully. No large, but I have a lot of small. Schit, that guys actually one of the better pricers on the EE lol. But I agree 100000%

I understand those are small primers and was just an example of what is available if one looks around.
There are site sponsors who have what one is looking for.
As for using small rifle primers in 6.5 or 308 I got nothing...

No prob! And again, thanks!!

$400 for a brick of Large Rifle Primers is my fav lol. And some people tried for more!

They'll hit the market again eventually, and I have plenty of factory ammo and reloads to hunt with, but its a "nice to know" thing. Some SRP brass would be nice just to have the option though, especially for range shooting

I’ve used Lapua SRP cases in .308 with mixed success. They all went bang, but I lost some long range accuracy in cooler weather..

My goal like some others was to see if having a little more meat in the casehead would help brass life with lets face it; a continuous diet of proof loads. Didn’t work for me, but others are happy enough.

I run small rifle primed cases in 6.5 creed, 260 ai and 308 win and have never noticed an issue. I usually run CCI 450 or br4s. As far as NATO spec primers go I have had issues in Remington 700s not igniting them. The cups seem very hard.

Dang. That must have been fast! Thanks anyway though, Uberti.

Thank you too Rob! Appreciate the info! I was worried about the same. Wasn't seeing a problem with the large rifle primer versions but...

I just bought a brick of LR and a brick of LRM from Higginson's... they may be out now, but worth a call.

I have been dabbling with the Lapua SRP brass, CCI small rifle magnum primers and my 338 federal. So far the results have been great but I haven’t had the opportunity to try them in cool weather yet, after doing some reading that will be the real test. Within the last year the only primers I could find were CCI 450s and now the 6.5CM, 308 and 338 federal have loads developed. Some developed loads don’t have any differences in speed or accuracy between the magnum SRP or standard large rifle primers with the same powder charges.

OP,
I've run Remington URBR (308 small primer) brass in .22-250,6BR,243,6.8-08,260,7,62x51,308 for decades w/o issue.

1/16", .062" diameter flash hole (Lapua Palma) brass will have issues attempting to ignite 40+ grains of powder at or below 32F scale.

5/64", .078" diameter flash hole brass will not have the ignition issue attempting to ignite 45+ grains of powder.

The above chamberings were bolt actions using Fed 205/205M,Rem 7-1/2BR,CCI 400,CCI 450 to ambient temps at -20F scale.
