I am looking to make a order for primers. I have been reading about using small rifle in place of small pistol primers. Some research has pointed to that they are the same in some brands. I am thinking CCI small rifle for light 38 loads.
Seem legit?

Would like to stock one type as i use in my bolt 223 also.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRIMER - A PRIMER ON PRIMERS
http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=56422.0

"NOTE 1: According to Speer/CCI Technical Services - Both the CCI 550 Small Pistol Magnum and CCI 400 Small Rifle primers are identical in size. Both primers use the same cup metal and share the same cup thickness. Both primers use the same primer compound formula and same amount of primer compound. They can be used interchangeably."

CCI 400 -thin .020" cup, not recommended for AR15 use by CCI/Speer. Good for .22 Hornet, .30 Carbine. See Note 1 above

Some work. Some don’t. S&B sr primers aren’t 100% in my revolvers and aren’t usable in my semi autos. The dominion primers seem to interchange. The federal seem ok too.

I have never tried, but as others have posted, SR tend to be harder. If reliable ignition is an issue, maybe look at your pistol rather than the primers. Even among SP primers, some are harder than others. Many claim more reliability with Federal claiming they are softer. I use S & B SP when I can get them, they work just fine for me; S & B LP for my .45, and S & B SR for my .223. I have used Winchester, CCI and Federal; and all work quite well. Federals big boxes are a bit of a pain with my lee auto-prime system.

I read an article in a reloading magazine recently where SP and Magnum SP primers were compared with similar loads; the result was contently slightly higher velocity, but a deterioration in accuracy.

Find what works, and use it.
