From what I have read it is possible to use small rifle primers in pistol rounds instead of small pistol primers.

Just wanted to hear what you fellas think.

Thanks

I would suggest that the SR primers have cups designed to withstand the higher pressures usually found in rifle cartridges. Don't think that I would use SP in a rifle.
No idea if they are more vigorous than SP primers, or would affect pressure in a pistol round.

One of our sponsors (CanadaAmmo IIRC) had explained that Dominion Arms small rifle and small pistol primers were identical except for the box. I bought a case of 5,000 on sale and have been through 3,000 of them in both 9 mm Minor loads and in 223 with no issues. I plan to continue using them.

On some rifles where your load is near or over max., there may be some benefits to using dedicated small-rifle primers which may have harder cups. I think that brand-to-brand variation in hardness may exceed that between small-pistol and small-rifle primers.

So , maybe the only difference is the thickness of the metal housing? As long as the firing pin in a handgun has enough force to fire the rifle primer it's good to go? But a small pistol primer in a rifle may not be good because it's softer ?

That's the difference, thickness of the cup, means it takes higher pressure to set off and withstands higher pressure before showing pressure signs or leaking.

I recently switched to SR primers for my 9mm IPSC and plinking loads.

Zero difference on the chrono and felt recoil. No issues with light primer or anything for that matter. Used in Glock 17, CZ 75B, Sig 226 all factory (production) pistols.

I've done with this with both Canada Ammo's primers and S&B primers. S&B actually list it as for SR and SP on the box.

Actually there can be significant differences in the intensity of different primers in small pistol to small rifle to small pistol mag and small rifle mag. Ganderite did a thread some time ago photographing a bunch of different primer flashes in a totally dark room, it was very enlightening (no pun intended) and the differences were significant in many cases.
