Small rifle primers.

The Dominion/Murom small rifle primers sold by Canada Ammo are advertised as also suitable for pistols and this agrees with my experience.

Does that work in reverse? Can small pistol primers be used in place of small rifle primers?

Specifically, CCI #500 small pistol primers. I have lots of those, so if I can avoid buying those Dominion/Murom small rifle primers, I can put that $ to something else.

Tight budget, and all that.

Also, any comments on using those Dom/Murom primers for AR15? Are they hard enough, too soft, any issues with these?

Steve, the guys at Canada Ammo replied the same as what tj found. But that was specific to the Dominion primers. It might be a bit of a stretch to assume that CCI small pistol can be used in 5.56 reloads. Mind you it might be OK if you base it on the pressure. I see loads for .357 Magnum at up to around 42,000 CUP. If you use loads for your 5.56 that does not go much over that then I'm guessing you can use them. But DO look at the spent primers for signs of over pressure. And I'd use the starting charge from the data and run a few test bullets to check for pressure signs and move up only if the primers don't look badly distorted.

Mind you my full power .357's leave the primers looking somewhat flattened anyway. So I guess SOME amount of distortion would be expected. Use the commercial 5.56 ammo and compare the primer condition of those to what you get and don't let your primers get any worse.

No, regular small pistol primers should not be used for rifle reloading.

I've used lots of the Dominion primers with my AR and they work fine for me.

BCRider/tjhaile- thanks for the replies.

I'll order the Dominion primers then. They sure are a good price!
