Small shotgun for bear defense

I see Sulun has a sxs shortie also, wondering how your experience is going? ejectors or extractors?

Extractors here. Havent had a chance to get out with it yet. Looking forward to patterning it with the different chokes. This will be my edc when out in the bush, although have only ever seen black bears when the apples are dropping in august/september.

For good practise one should be practising clearly a jammed gun. Have a buddy load the gun and slip a snap cap in randomly. Get a click and clear it and get back on target

Brybenn .... that is not a jam .... that is just a dud!!!

Easy ... I just rack my 870 .... and I am back on target .... in a split second ... ;)

And without changing anything in my firing position .... or taking my eyes off the target ....

A jam is a totally different story .....

Still teaches you to deal with unexpected failures. I agree I should have worded it better though.
I think my pumps will take a back seat to my 1301 comp when out in the berry patches. It's a lil longer but I really like the gun. I've been using it alot lately

Failure to feed, fire, extract, or eject, they all require different fixes. Some of them would be a real nightmare if they happened at the wrong time. Any firearm can fail, so you darn well better know how your firearm is most likely to fail - And how to fix it in a hurry.

Except for failure to fire, I've personally experienced each of the failure types more than once with various 870s over the years (Wingmaster included). But the 870 is still at or near the top of my list as a recommended platform.

Regardless of your chosen firearm, the best solution for each type of failure, every time, is a reliable backup firearm (preferably carried by another competent user).

I like the idea. And a moving target coming at you like an Olympic sprinter

Edit As well the snap cap idea would be good for seeing flinch

Dummy rounds and crimped casings randomly loaded by those other than the shooter are GREAT ways to train for stoppages and to expose the flinch.

This and have someone else load the firearm. Sometimes you have none and sometimes you have a couple back to back.

Agreed. Have your buddy randomly load a round backward and then you can clear a jam!

Had the sulun out a couple times now. Gotta say it is a blast to shoot, literally!

Ive shot: field loads, goose loads, and slugs out of it and was surprised at the results. The lower barrel shoots much lower than the top so you have to compensate quite a lot but at 30yrds i was about minute of hand with my home made slugs after adjusting for the barrel differences.

No vid of the slugs shooting but with a recoil pad it isnt so bad. And if anything is close enough that youd need to shoot, you wouldnt feel it anyways.

Found a great holster rig for it to carry it around when im doing work on the property. Still have to make some slight adjustments though but nothing major.

Forgive the crappy video, but you get what you pay for :p

Theres also a video of patterning it for turkey, as well as my turkey hunt using it.

Will be testing more slugs so i may make a vid on that as well.

Very happy with this little guy!

Just received my medium length Sulun SS-211 last week, hoping to get it to the range tomorrow and see how it patterns with the 3 different choke sets it shipped with. It's light enough to carry comfortably, handy length and the butt stock is a pretty useable length. I hope it's reliable and the barrels are somewhat well regulated. May get an extra full choke for it to use it for grouse hunting in the fall for birds that are on the ground or roosted.

Be careful with steel shot in the mod choke, mine bulged out enough to make it super hard to remove after one shot (rubber gloves and elastic bands for grip to unscrew the unthreaded part of the tube) i have a carlssons cremator on the way to use instead.

Also, get a recoil pad, made a huge difference in impact as well as length of pull to shoulder it better :)

Turkish factory chokes are a weak point. Always replace them with aftermarket

As in they are cheap quality, or they also throw poor patterns? I tried shooting 2 3/4" 00 buck today from the cylinder chokes and the modified ones too, the patterns were terrible. Slugs shot pretty close to P.O.A. out of the cylinder chokes in the top barrel but the bottom barrel was pretty low and to the left at 15 yards. The full chokes were ok with #7.5 target loads but again the bottom barrel is quite a bit low and left from where the top one impacts. Thinking I may try some Carlson IC and extra full chokes, these are the ones I'm most likely to use the most.

One oddity I noted is that the second trigger pull for the bottom barrel feels multiple times harder/stiffer than the initial pull for the top barrel, never noticed that when dry firing prior to getting out to the range. Did not try setting the bottom barrel to fire first to see if it hap0ened on that configuration.
