Hey folks,
Just out of curiosity, what are some of the smaller handguns available in Canada without barrel modification (or with barrel modification that are readily available/mass produced for Canada).
Is something like a Glock 19 with the longer/threaded barrel really the smallest sized/frame gun we can get in 9mm or .45? I've done some searching but haven't found a whole lot on the subject. It's much easier for the states since there's concealed carry so you can find a lot on the subject.
If concealed carry were allowed in Canada, what do you all think you'd consider carrying that's currently available on the market?
I've always been fascinated by things like the derringer, so would be cool to get something smallish for my collection (non-existing thus far) eventually. Seems like it's not worth it though since they don't really exist in Canada.
I am assuming you don't have a prohibited handgun license.
Minimum barrel length for a restricted is over 105mm long. Which is about medium in terms of length. Not a lot of people are interested in tiny little guns with obnoxiously long barrels. Not many gun manufacturers both making special edition guns with small frames and long barrels just for the Canadian market, but Glock does seem to be doing a pretty good job on that front.
For concealed carry, I would use the full sized Sig 226 in 9mm. It conceals just fine with the right holster. Assuming Canada ever did allow wider access to Concealed Carry, there is no guarantee that the restricted class would be expanded to legalize shorter barreled pistols.
Anything on the market today can and has been carried by someone somewhere. All depends on the gun, the holster, the location, and the clothes you plan to wear to conceal it.
In regards to your fascination with the derringer, is this a part of, or separate from, your interest in concealed carry? Not many would consider a derringer a good choice for CC. But as a collection piece, sure. Deactivation is always an option, but we couldn't be friends if I heard you were regularly deactivating firearms.
As for your last comment, Derringers, snubbies, pocket pistols, saturday night specials and a whole host of other short barreled compact firearms certainly exist in Canada. There are hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of them that were at one time legally owned by a Canadian gun, but have since been made illegal by our gun laws, and as a result no one talks about them or knows where they are. But they exist. Get to know some old timers who have been in the shooting game for 50+ years and you will start to hear some stories, and maybe even see some of them.
