I would like to purchase a smaller sized 40S&W chambered handgun for my wife.

She has shot several of my handguns over the last few years and likes my G20 10mm the best.

I'd like to stay with the 40cal because other than cases I have everything to reload the 40S&W round.

I'm leaning towards a Glock for her but would consider other guns but don't really have to much experience with them.

Any suggestions would be great........

You already said she likes your Glock 10mm best, why look for another type of gun? If she likes it, buy her a G22.

Camp Cook's first sentence was "I would like to purchase a smaller sized 40S&W chambered handgun for my wife." ...that's why I suggested an XD.
As Detective Special suggested, a G22 would be the obvious choice if CC or CC's wife decides to stick with a Glock.

Which model would you recommend for her?

There's only one model available to us in Canada: the XD-40 "Tactical" with 5" barrel. They are available in either all-black or OD green/black.
I found that my XD-40 had less muzzle flip than my Glock G35 and was just as (if not more..) accurate. They are also about $200 to $250 less expensive than a G22, depending upon where you buy. I got mine from Wolverine Supplies. Great people, great service.

Small Frame

I like the springfield but for a small easy to hold handgun I would opt for a Walter p99 in 40 cal, it comes with a customizable grip and is only 25 oz.

Now I don't usually wade into these things but do you know how my G22 are in use in North America? I don't either but consider the amount of police that use them and the general public, I find this "rumour" to be silly to say the least. I believe this is one of those urban legends which purpetuates itself online. You will be well served by a G22 without risk of it blowing up  I think you can find a story concerning every single firearm out there that has had problems. I have chatted with a number of police who are issued G22s, they have not heard of a service incident with a G22. I would not use this as an issue when it comes to purchasing.

That all being said, Max, if you think they could self detonate, probably a good call not to get one. I could see your concern. Like I said, I just think it one of those retold stories. Kind of like Norinco quality.... :D

The XD40 sounds good but I have heard some reports about the extractor being of poor/weak design.

The Glock extractor is extremely robust and is supposed to be almost unbreakable whereas reports on the XD40's are that the extractors are flimsy and prone to breaking like 1911 designed guns.

Has anyone had any experiences with a G35 40S&W?

I wanted to recommend a Kahr 40 but after looking at their site they are much too "evil" (small) for Canadian to own. I guess she shoud look at a BHP 40 S&W, BHPs fit most people and the 40 is the softest shooting 40 S&W I have shot. a g22 is considerably smaller both in grip size and slide width than a g20

the g22 uses the g17 (9mm) frame/slide, and the g20 uses the larger frame and deeper grip to hold the longer 10mm rounds.

Well so far I've decided on a 3rd generation G23 with a slightly longer 107mm barrel length and a Advantage Arms 22LR conversion kit for my wife.

Thanks for the replies and keep the thoughts coming I will not be buying the gun for a while yet.

I held the XD40 as well yesterday and it feels and points extremely well but have read on other threads that parts availability may not be that good, plus no 22LR conversion kits available.
