Smallest, lightest, shortest .223 bolt gun?

EDIT due to added comment

They chamber the 527 Carbine in .223.........well worth it. I love my CZs. They aren't even that expensive, IIRC they were selling for $760 a few months ago

It is available in the 527 Carbine, which has an 18.5" barrel. Ruger did chamber it in th Compact, and that has a 16.5" barrel and a short 12.5" LOP. I think that would be the most compact bolt action .223 on the market.

Ever consider having a Stevens 200 shortened? After having a quick look at specs it seems as though you could have a rifle that's only 3/4" more in OAL and probably very close to the same weight after taking the barrel back to 16.5" for less. Having the barrel chopped and re-crowned would cost a bit but it should still be cheaper then the M77 Compact - just some food for thought!

He would have to find a manufactured barrel under 18" for the Stevens would he not?

Sorry, didn't notice you were in NZ. I believe our Canadian laws prevent the alteration (shortening) of barrels below 18", even though we are allowed to purchase new ones in almost any length.

Ahhh yes... Forgot about all that silly business! :HR:

Might still be worth investigating just for the cost savings since having a barrel that's 1.5" shorter would cost a pretty penny.

My Rem Model 7 in .223 originally came with a 18 1/2" pencil barrel on it.

I later had it changed out for a Model 700 24" take-off barrel, though.

NAA.

The other option is to find a Remington 799 (Zastava mini-mauser), have the barrel shortened and recrowned and drip it into an MPI ultralight stock. That should get the weight down to under 5lbs. It would be like a handy little .22LR...but with significantly more "go".

If you want really small and light, a TC Contender with a full length stock could be fitted with a factory 14" barrel and still be over 26" OAL. You may be able to get away with a 12" barrel and still be non-restricted.
