Hello
I was thinking of changing up up my optic on my river 1022.
I’m currently running a Leupold 1-4 x20 pigplex and I was thinking a red dot would be better.

Is there anything available with a 1/2 MOA dot?

Would it be to difficult to see on a bright day?

Thanks

I don't really see much call for smaller then 1, red dots are more for speed then pure accuracy.

Think about it, if your 10/22 is able to print one inch groups at 100 yards, a 1 moa dot would be the perfect size.... anything covered by the dot is catching lead... :)

I bet most iron sights are around 4 MOA if you compare em to a target, but ;you; can hit much better than that. I wouldn't consider "dot size" to equal your shot grouping size!

But I am also very surprised when I see 4,5, or even 8moa dots on the EE. I sure hope they're only meant for pistols and CQ!

the Vortex Razor AMG UH-1 has a 1 moa dot. excellent optic, can get very bright, but not cheap
That do look good , unfortunately it’s out of my range.
I think the Leupold freedom is more in my ballpark as I have a 1.5-4x20 that I’d like to trade..

Out the two that I’ve found ( Sig and Leupold) have you used either?

I have not, Don't rule out a 2-3 moa dot for your 10/22. Used Vortex and maybe Primary Arms have transferable life time warranties with no receipts needed.... a used sparc could be found for less then $150-200 shipped and if it ever fails on you Vortex is easy to deal with.

Another option is the older Vortex Prism 1X that has a 1 moa dot and a larger circle reticle. They are also around $200 used. The original version came with different mount options for mounting the optic and different heights depending on the gun and the later version was set up for AR's and is fixed at 1.5" high.

I think the largest dot I have is maybe around 3moa, your correct the larger sizes are for CQB and the idea is to just get that big dot center mass as fast as possible.

Just to point out that there is a method of shooting for accuracy with larger red dots. For example if you have a 4moa red dot for pistol or shotgun, and you switch it to your rifle which can shoot sub-MOA, then instead of putting the red dot on the target as you normally would, you can use a sight picture that aligns the top of the red dot with the target, similar to a 6o’clock hold.

The same principle is used by Holosun with their ACSS (Primary Arms) reticle, which uses a chevron for fast pickup, but the tip of the chevron can be used for accuracy.

I was thinking for things that are bit further out,say 50 yards, and is moving fast a smaller dot would be better.
Especially for smaller sized targets.

If you can check out some red dot's in person, I didn't know I had astigmatism till I started using red dots the shape of my eye causes the dot to flare out and not be perfectly round in all situations. For me it's not enough to stop using red dots but some people get annoyed bye a less then perfect round aiming point.

I prefer smaller dots myself but fast moving small targets at 50 yards are pretty tough no matter what your dot size..... I usually wait till they stop moving unless I'm shooting a shot gun.... :)

I’ve used a few before, but only the cheaper tascos with the 3 or 4 MOA dot.

I was just thinking a smaller dot would be bit more accurate on small moving things.

The advantage I see with a smaller dot size is less target is covered and I like putting the dot on the spot so to speak over a 6 o'clock hold.

Probably won't make much difference shooting at small moving targets as your accuracy is mostly limited by the challenge of hitting moving targets which is a more instinctive type of shooting then staticly holding on a small target.

It's possible a slightly larger dot size would be better for moving shots as you can pick up the dot easier.

Eotech holographic sights may be the answer for you. Specs list 1 MOA center dot, but in reality it is tiny, looks the same with and without a magnifier.
