Smallest Restricted semi-auto

some canadian company, or someone in canada should design a compact/subcompact pistol that would satisfy all of the canadian restricted laws. im seeing some sort of new or modified short cartridge that would allow the chamber and barrel to start extremely far back in the slide. this way the 4" law could still be satisfied, but still maintain a compact size. anyone have any thoughts on that?

Well, that sounds like HK P7 to me.

And you don't want to design a new cartridge - who will mass manufacture it at a reasonable cost? Just for the Canadian market? Eh?

Well looks like the H&K P7M8. (If anyone has a minty one at a USED price, shoot me a PM) Someone had a few new one's for sale a couple months back for cheap, I should have grabbed one. I've owned just about everything. The snake slayer was ok. Found the trigger pull to be way over the top, and you would be lucky to shoot yourself in the mirror.

The reason the P7 is so short is that it uses a fixed barrel. As a result it can sit back in the frame as it doesn't need to shift/unlock like most browning/tilt designs.

That being said, the extended barrel of the Canadian legal small guns really isn't that much of an issue unless you put it in a shoulder holster.

P7's are kind of tough to clean, I strongly recommend Rodger Kotanko's hard chrome as it does cover the interior and makes it a slicker surface and easier to clean. Spare parts are available but also may take awhile.

Modern HK's like the P2000 and SIG P229 or P239 despite the extended barrel are fairly compact.

when it comes to smallest .. it all depends where you want the gun to be small. see for me , i like smalls guns better . dont know why . just do.. but small to me is length.. the sig 226 fits perfectly in my hands but i wish it was just a tad bit shorter in length .closer to the 229, i like the glock 19 better than the 17. i dont like the 26,27 models i think they are too small and with the cdn barrel length look silly to me, but ive shot a ppk/s in the states and love how it fits my hands, same with a beretta cougar, . i love the p7, however , some people just dont like it . and i STRONGLY recommend shooting it before you buy one. as they are expensive. also if it breaks plan on either getting spare parts for it. or be waiting a while. and if you shoot it lots ... well they get pretty hot. and are a bit finicky with ammo. lets say i knew someone who wanted one for a long long time. bought it . and hated it .. didnt like the squeeze cocker, and fingers got burnt and thought it was crap. sold it and bought a p2000 and loves it. out of all the guns out there that are small and have a bit of a barrel sticking out the end . the hk p2000, sig 239 tactical and the glock 19 , are the only ones i can think of that arent that bad looking with the barrel and are pretty small. then theres the beretta px4 in 45 which is just on the legal barrel limit, and pretty small compared to say a 92fs or a glock 17. but its only in 45. .. the 9mm and 40 have a extended barrel.

but again .try anything if you can before you buy it.. you may be surprised. pictures, and someone telling you they love it. doesnt mean you will.

oh and theres the
para ltc
sti ranger II ( both commander style 1911's )
they are pretty small .comfy and skinny .

hope that helps a bit

I have to add a Llama commander size 1911 in 9mm. It has a smaller sized frame and because of that it is very compact, about the size of a P7. Much smaller than a full sized frame 1911 commander.

Beretta model 75
The big question is "does it need a hoslter ?"
For the 75, the answer is definitely no"

The STI ranger II in 9mm is not a bad gun. Fairly short, superthin, very accurate and reliable. 9 rounds per magazine.

Do note that it is not a true 'commander' frame. The dust cover is the same length as a government frame. Purchase your holsters appropriately.

wow, very nice,
i like those grips you have on the last photo , i think same ones on the second and third photo as well. what kind are they ?

did you have that finish done by sti's custom shop or somewhere else ?

hands down, it is the HK p7 or psp, recently bought a p7 on cgn, and finally figured it out, the magazine goes in almost vertically, and the trigger is located right below the front of the ejection port, and the fixed barrel which i think goes only to accuracy, sits farther back

so with the hk's legal length barrel, the design has its oal shorter by about 2mm from say a colt officer's 45 with a 3.5 inch barrel,

the p7 is also about 2mm shorter than the officer's shorten frame height, while giving a full size grip for the shooting hand, wow for an "old" german design.

imho, this leads us to wonder about the stupid gun laws as to prohib size, based on barrel length, while the states measured theirs on the overall height that led to their prohib status on the walther ppk, which got circumvented with the ppk/s introduced. maybe they should just build a really small box frame, and any guns that could fit inside, sans grips, should be then prohib?
