Hi,

I'm still hunting for a new stock.... I have come across this smart stock accuracy system and was hoping for some input from you guys...

I don't reload... I know... I know...

So this thing is supposed to work by changing a contact point under the barrel in order to tune the barrel's harmonics to a load, instead of tuning a load to a barrel...

http://ww.rifle-accuracy.com/smartstock.htm

Has anyone seen or used one of these... do they work?

Thanks again for all your help...

I can't see your pic/link, but putting threaded bedding points in a rifle's fore end is an old gunsmithing trick for adjusting bedding tension, and yes it does work. Ideally you want two screws, opposing each other in the fore end that you adjust equally. There is an excellant article on this very thing in this month's Precision Shooting. - dan

22 rimfire shooters do this all the time.

Simple solution is to put a threaded block into the foreend of the stock (must be rigid), then thread a bolt through this to contact the barrel. Increase or decrease pressure on this bolt on the barrel and it should do what you want.

Some get more complicated by putting a pad on top of the bolt or making an attachment on the barrel itself that this tuning bolt goes into (makes sure barrel can't slip off this bolt/pad).

sliding a pad along the length of the barrel does similar things but then you have to take into account barrel and stock taper.

All does the same thing by applying varying amounts of pressure on the barrel to affect its harmonics.

You can also just hang a weight off the muzzle and spin that in and out ala Win BOSS.

Personally, I don't like barrel pressure adjustors as the stock has to be absolutely stable. If the forend moves at all, it will influence the barrel which will drive you insane trying to tune this out. Also, there is potential for the front rest itself to influence the barrel.

With a centerfire, there is enough recoil bounce that if the front rest/bag is too hard, it can affect how the rifle recoils and thus barrel harmonics. Why free floating solves so many of these problems.

Wouldn't do this if planning to use a bipod. Ground surface changes and associated bounce could affect tuning AND POI. Just more variables when you are trying to get rid of them.

But then you would have to reload...
