Smith 17-4 Question

I just recently bought a Smith and Wesson Model 17-4

It had a Target Trigger and Hammer installed by last owner

Question is

When i shot someone elses 22 Revolver which was a 617 once you pulled the hammer back and after the initial fire the Trigger pull was very nice and close to the handle

On mine

If i want the nice easy trigger pull and my trigger to stay back i have to operate the gun in Single Action

If i run the gun in Double Action the trigger pull is stiff and the actual trigger pull is alot longer

Is this normal or is this from the Target setup?

I'd say it was normal. I don't understand about the first one you referred to, but in double action you are actually cocking the hammer and rotating the cylinder before it lets off. That's where the long trigger pull comes in.You may be able to lighten the pull somewhat by backing off on the mainspring tension, as long as you don't over do it to the point that it won't fire.

Your description of the first gun doesn't make sense. The gun is a double action revolver. Unless you manually #### the hammer back, the trigger will be full forward and take about 12 pounds to cycle. From your description, it sounds like you are suggesting the first gun was self cocking, which doesn't happen.

All S&W revolvers of a given frame size have the same length of double action trigger pull and the same length of single action trigger pull. The only difference between a target hammer and trigger and a regular one is that they are wider.

Are you describing the double action binding? This could certainly be caused by improperly fitted lockwork. Also, keep in mind that .22 rimfires don't lend themselves as readily to light double action pulls, as it is more difficult to get reliable ignition.
