I just picked up a S&W 1854 in 44 mag. It seems to be a pretty nice rifle so far but I haven't shot it yet so we will see. I want to put a scout style scope on it, I was thinking the Burris Scout 2-7x32 or the Leupold VX Freedom 1.5-4, however, I can't seem to find a longer pic rail with out going for the RPP hand guard, which I am not interested in for this rifle. Would a long cantilever mount provide enought eye relief or is there a better way of going about this?

I bought one and took it to the range this past weekend. So far I'm loving the gun. Just need to work in that gate and maybe paracord wrap the lever for non-gloved use. Lots of knuckle banging but thats not unique to this model.

Even with my crappy eyes, landing silhouette steel at 100 yards was fun and easy. I, too, am considering a scout scope but given 44 mag limited range being a pistol caliber. I'm now thinking about a 3x prism with a riser to cowitness original ghost ring.

After doing some research, it looks like the 1854 is compatible with Marlin 1894 external parts so I am gonna try and hunt down a XS extended rail and try that out.

Good to hear you are loving it. I am waiting on my order of 44 mag ammo to arrive before I can get it to the range. It's tough finding it for less than $70 a box but I managed to find some for $56/box at Tenda.
How is the recoil?

Is it me, or is it just a 336 with a shortened action for pistol calibers?

From what I can gather the 336 is based on a Marlin 1893, while this S&W is based on the Marlin 1894. So I guess it depends on whether the 1894 is a short version of the 1893 or not.
