Smith and Wesson 29-2 value?

So I found a 6" 29-2 in a local gun store on consignment, and am thinking about buying it instead of a new 629 for a wilderness ATC. What seems to be the going rate for one if it is in decent shape? I didn't have a chance to handle it because wife and kids were in the truck waiting, but it looked decent in the case, other than a bit of blue wear at the muzzle. Thanks

Thanks for the quick replies. The asking price for this one is $600. Hopefully it will be there after the new year so I can check it out properly.

$600 is a very nice price for a 29-2 in good condition, but I would choose a new 4.2" 629 for wilderness carry. The shorter barrel makes for a handier belt gun and the newer guns stand up better to heavy loads.
 
$600 seems to be a great price to me, and I agree with tjhaile with the barrel length. There is a reason the police went with a 4” barrel on all those revolvers and it wasn’t accuracy.
 
How much of a difference does the barrel length make? I wear bib overalls at work, and will probably use a vertical shoulder holster to keep it out of the way and still accessible.

6 inch would make it late 70's or into the 80's. And that can mean no pinned barrel and no recessed chambers.
If it is, then $600 is still a great deal.
 
wow, I always thought one in good condition would be at least $1000. hmmmmmm i always wanted a 44. i want one thats pinned and recessed though

Well, a minty 29-2 of the right age, thats pinned and recessed is going to eat up most of your $1000. I would think $750 for a nice example would be about the right price. One with the display case in 98% condition may be over $1000.

I've posted this photo previously. This one is, 29-2, pinned & recessed. And as a side issue, I've been informed the S&W factory ivory magna grips on it are worth more than the gun.



And this most recent acquisition, my Elmer Keith Commemorative, 29-3 and not recessed.

A shoulder holster would carry the 6" barrel much more comfortably than a belt holster, but I would still go for the lighter, more compact 4.2" barrel on a gun that is going to be worn all day.

If it's a 29-2, it is pinned and recessed. These features were deleted with the introduction of the 29-3 in 1982.

I paid 1275 for mine. Considering that these things are very hard to find, 600 seems like a real steal, and under priced. Hell new used smiths made this year will go for 800 or more. You could put that same gun on the EE and sell it for 800 no problem. They are hard to find and people want them.

This is a more accurate price. Would have to see the condition of the gun to say more. But if its even 95 percent condition , then thats a good price. With the wooden presentation case it could go even 1000 to 1200. Unfired it could go for 1400 or more.

Wow, very nice. The one I saw isn't even close. It could be a 6.5", I didn't really look too close. I don't know if it comes with the wood case or not, but it looks like it was carried a fair bit, so my guess is it probably doesn't. Hopefully it is still there and I get a chance to stop by on Monday.

I have one for my 4" however, the blue liner is a little ratty. Would you happen to know if replacements are available?
