If it's a 29-2, it is pinned and recessed. These features were deleted with the introduction of the 29-3 in 1982.

Yes. I meant the 6 inch barrel was made in 1979. S&W discontinued the 6 1/2 barrel that year.
 
:)Thanks guys. Much appreciated. I have no intention of;) parting with 'Mrs. Smith' but I would still like to have the original case for it to be put back in decent condition. I'll see if I can take a photo of it to show the problem but it's just the blue liner that's shabby. The rest of the case condition is virtually like new. Thanks again:).
 
Had a good look today, it's not as nice as it looked at first glance. Timing is ok, but one cylinder didn't lock before the hammer clicked back. Lockup isn't too bad, end shake is only about .003" with .006" cylinder gap. It has lots of blueing wear on the cylinder and trigger guard as well as the muzzle, plus a fair bit of wear on the cylinder where the hand rotates it. I offered $500, but it's a consignment, and the guy won't budge. Comes with just the original cardboard box too, not the nice wood one. It's a 6.5" barrel, so it's an older one.

Yes, the four-screw (the fourth screw is is front of the trigger guard) guns like the 29-0 are worth a premium and are significantly less common compared to the three-screw 29-2. Mine is a 6-1/2" gun, also made in 1961. Unfortunately, no Coke-bottle stocks, though.

Some other, even rarer configurations include pre-Model 29s with the five-screw (the fifth screw is on top of the sideplate; most pre-29s were built with four-screw frames) frame, and the 29-1, which introduced left-hand threaded ejector rod (mostly three-screw, with some built as four-screw).

29-2s are actually relatively common, as they had the single longest production run of all the different versions of the Model 29. Most 29-2s were also built when S&W was owned by Bangor Punta, beginning in 1965; not exactly S&W's "good old days".
 
Not to side track on OP. I see we got all the S&W lovers. Can you guys give some idea when they were made. Checked S&W forum Wow every one asks they same thing.

I recall someone posting the various changes in the productions; example, dash 1 had the change from a pinned barrel. Dash 2 had... Dash 3 had such and such. I have a Dash 7 coming my way soon and would be interested (others, OP included would benefit) if it could be posted here again?

Find out what a full service/re-time and tighten would cost, then look at the cost of one in perfect shape, and decide from there. If it's getting worked on anyway, you can throw in a trigger job. I rather have a good tuned gun from a 'smith than a new gun out of the box.

I could do the work myself too, then it would only be money for the parts. I have done an over sized hand and cylinder stop in a k frame before, and it worked out pretty good. Here goes another order to Brownells.
