I thought all -2's were pinned&recessed?
They are as far as i know. So are just the model 29s. Its the 29-3 that doesnt have the recessed chambers. As ive owned one.

no sir, i dunno. PM rfo1, he has been collecting smiths for 20 years. He may be able to answer that question.

A shoulder holster would carry the 6" barrel much more comfortably than a belt holster, but I would still go for the lighter, more compact 4.2" barrel on a gun that is going to be worn all day.
If it's a 29-2, it is pinned and recessed. These features were deleted with the introduction of the 29-3 in 1982.
I have one for my 4" however, the blue liner is a little ratty. Would you happen to know if replacements are available?
If you go to the S&W forum I believe this topic is covered there. - dan
I dint want to hijack the thread, but I have a no-dash model 29, 8 3/4 from 1961. Great condition. are they worth more
Had a good look today, it's not as nice as it looked at first glance. Timing is ok, but one cylinder didn't lock before the hammer clicked back. Lockup isn't too bad, end shake is only about .003" with .006" cylinder gap. It has lots of blueing wear on the cylinder and trigger guard as well as the muzzle, plus a fair bit of wear on the cylinder where the hand rotates it. I offered $500, but it's a consignment, and the guy won't budge. Comes with just the original cardboard box too, not the nice wood one. It's a 6.5" barrel, so it's an older one.

Surprised no one mentioned the 29-2 6.5" is the Dirty Harry gun ; )

Find out what a full service/re-time and tighten would cost, then look at the cost of one in perfect shape, and decide from there. If it's getting worked on anyway, you can throw in a trigger job. I rather have a good tuned gun from a 'smith than a new gun out of the box.
Contact my buddy, he has been collecting smiths for years. He should be able to help you. Im surprised no others have come forward yet.
