Smith and Wesson FPC Range Report and 250 round Review

...I would like to do this mod. Does one take the same amount of "length" off each corner of the follower?
Have you done, or needed to shorten the spring length too?....

Well, the best solution is using 10/17 magazines, but good luck finding those!

Yes, I removed the same amount from each leg of the follower - Just use sandpaper on a flat surface, and lightly press the follower down on top. Try to apply even pressure, but still move the follower over the sandpaper in figure-eight motion to try to minimize error. Stop and check often: You can't put material back on once it's been sanded off.

I prefer to remove the minimum amount necessary to give full capacity - In theory, the longer magazine follower legs help the follower to stay aligned in the mag tube. In practice, maybe it doesn't matter, but you'll see longer follower legs on magazine followers of many different double-stack types.

I never shortened any springs, it wasn't necessary. I generally try to make minimal modifications necessary to get things working the way they are supposed to.

The Maglula Uplula is a good investment if your thumbs aren't up to the task. Or, even if your thumbs are up to the task and you'd just like less arthritis in the future. It also makes it much easier for kids (etc.) to help load magazines, too.

Thank you for the clarity.
I will begin with the mod to the follower. Since I have and use a Luplula
loading tool, hopefully the follower mod will do the trick.

So I performed the material removal of the mag-follower, on all three magazines. I sanded away the follower legs up to the "arc" on the leading edge, removing equal amounts of material around the follower perimeter.

Then, with the help of the Uplula, loaded 10 rounds into each mag. However, even with the Uplula, getting that last round in was tough. The steel tab on the Uplula was beginning to flex under the downward strain.

Then I decided to remove one coil from the mag spring on each mag, and loaded 10 rounds into each mag again, with the help of the Uplula. Hardly any difference / clearance obtained was noted from the removal of one coil. Maybe 1 mm or so.....
That tenth round just barely squeezes in, but I left it at that.

For others that have done these mods.... have you removed more than one coil on the springs, and did that allow for any more clearance than removing just one coil?

I have done two with no ill effect and the mags were a bit easier to load. I have several mags for my M&P. If you go two and Still have a,problem I'll try three. I'll back to you here with the results. Given the same length of springs are found in the Compact I have there should be room to nip more than two off.

Take Care
Bob

I have had zero issues with my FPC. Fun gun to shoot and actually quite accurate. My only issue as stated above had been loading the mags. I am using a tool and it quickly solved that issue.

Great post! I went with the freedom ordance fx9 but always wondered what it would be like to fire the s&W. maybe one day I’ll pick it up

It's just a polymer clamshell forend directly mounted on the barrel, right? So, there's going to be some variation at the very least. The question is if the molds for the forend pieces were out of true, or if it's just installation "noise" from the assembly process. I'll be interested to hear if other people have the same issue.

If it's just random noise, you might be able to get the forend in better alignment with the barrel by removing it and reinstalling it. Unless it's really bad, I'd probably just use BUIS that have windage adjustable bases.

I removed and reinstalled the handguard and re-zero'ed my irons. It still needs a pretty far windage adjustment to the left. I wonder if the mold wasn't true with they extruded it. Hopefully we get some aftermarket handguard on the market soon. I would love a high-quality aluminum one.

Maybe a bit of a long shot here, but never hurts to try. Finally got my license, and I'm looking hard at the FPC for my first purchase. I'd like to try before I buy. Anyone on south Vancouver Island with a range membership who'd let me try theirs in exchange for me bringing ammunition to share?

Too bad your not in Toronto area. I would totally take you. I really like my FPC. Found an adapter barrel nut that will allow AR-15 hand guards.....that may clear up my current hand guard issue.

Am sure it has been said already but haven’t read through all 73 posts to confirm…

Blow back guns do NOT like steel/aluminum cased ammo…I know the Ruger PC Carbine manual tells you do not shoot it…pretty sure the FX9 one does as well!!!

I was in "Commie TO" until just last year! Had to get out. Now I'm in Commie Victoria . . . Thanks for the offer though, very kind.

Mounted the adapter nut and an AR 15" handguard. Totally cleared up my sight issues. Also the longer hand guard is pretty nice too.
