I just bought this K22 17-2 Masterpiece Smith and Wesson revolver, it came with the orginal box and paperwork and is very good condition. I am looking for infomation about the revolver,, build date (serial number is K63####) and model info,,the box has a section which says Special Features, which says Det Holsterman. It also has a piece of plastic that goes on the grip to increase the grip size. I appreciate any help I can get

Thanks

Your model 17-2 was manuf. in 1966. Holsterman could be a detective who specially ordered the revolver trough his Dept. or a local gun shop owner special order. The black plastic grip part is simply a grip fitter so you have more grip on the small magnas your revolver is wearing. It's for use as intended, a target pistol.

Very nice piece you have there. have fun with it.

Thanks for the info,,I went back to the owner and found out he was a police officer (retired). Yes it is a nice revolver, I am looking forward to shooting it.

Thanks

Mac 63,

I bought a S&W model 17-2 a while ago (from H.C. in fact); it is the only
gun that never gets left behind. No matter what, the K22 goes to the range.
It is a first-class, loads of fun piece.

Welcome to the club!

I recently purchased my own Model 17 from a local shooting buddy and all my previous biases about shooting such a heavy .22 caliber gun went away with the first session. The S&W .22 revolvers truly are the ideal art forms of the .22 caliber wheelgun world.

The black plastic grip adapter probably says Pachmyr on it.

Myself I have a 1940 made S&W Heavy Duty in 38 Special that was issued by the BCPP in 1940, until they were disbanded in 1950.

It too has the same plastic grip adapter, although mine is for an N-frame.

Consider yourself very lucky friend. It's not often a former police handgun, makes it's way onto our Canadian market!

If I were you were you I would send Roy Jinks at S&W 50US funds for a factory letter, it only will make your gun worth that much more in the future and find out alot about the way it left the factory, nice gun Dale in T-Bay
