Smith and Wesson Model 39

The model 39 is a nice gun . I like mine. However they were discontinued quite a number of years ago. 4" inch barrel is it. No other model barrel fits. ( As far as I know ).

The only way to get a longer barrel that I am aware of would have to be a custom made one . Several people on this site have tried with no luck to come up with a longer barrel.

I own a Mdl. 39 and have only a restricted license. Barry Jensen of Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC made a 4.25" bbl. for it. Made the gun $500 instead of $300, but I wanted it for my collection (first double action auto made on this side of the Atlantic). It's too bad that Canadian law is written the way it is, but the only way a "restricted" can own that pistol is by changing the barrel and re-registering it.

S&W Mdl 39 was also the first DA semi auto 9mm pistol adopted by a North American Police Dept, Illinois State Police in 1967. It played an important role in later developpements in Police Depts arsenals as most corps (if not all) are using pistols these days...

Had a few 39s over the years....Used to be a favorite daily piece 20 years ago as it's light, slick, accurate, compact and carries well in an IWB. With good ammo it's 8 + 1 capacity is all you need in a defensive pistol. Grip shape, specifically that round backstrap, is one of the most comfortable I've seen...As for looks, a second generation stainless Mdl 639 with the original walnut grips is quite nice...

Thumbs up to Barry out west, I can attest he does some great work at fair prices.

And the 39 is the direct ancestor of the Model 52. Which you can own, though finding one with the DA trigger is extremely unlikely!

True, but the model 52 is a .38 special wadcutter. I had one in my bullseye shooting days. I seem to remember that the U.S. shooting team used model 52's but in a " custom " caliber , I think it was a 38 AMU. Basically a rimless 38.

Another gun I should have kept.

Keep an eye on the EE, I sold a converted one last year, average price for the
Restricted versions seem to around $450ish, overall not a bad little gun, aluminum frame makes a little jumpy for 9mm
