smith and wesson sd9 any good?

yes, the trigger pull isn't fantastic. But, the way I see it, you're getting a reliable, comfortable to shoot, pleasant looking handgun that is the same size as the Glock19, which is double the price.

You won't mind the trigger., unless you're a 2lb 1911 guy who isn't into defense style firearms. I know of someone who now only shoots/competes with his sd9 due to it being a very accurate shooter. Apparently his grouping size dropped considerably, even after the first couple outings . He is a gun store employee at Bullseye in London. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

When these came out... tons of guys bought them and you should see how fast they went on the EE. I bought one, it has the worst trigger that I've ever used. Put it on the EE after a couple of boxes and someone bought it. A month later I was browsing the EE - he had it up for sale.
If you are used to a good trigger and you get an SD9, you will be shocked. I'm a Sig guy and bought this one because it was cheap, ended up not liking it's ergonomics and hating the long, stiff and spongy trigger. You get what you pay for. I can shoot any Sig more accurately than the SD9 so I got rid of it. Add in $50 spare magazines (if you can find them) for a cheap gun and it makes it even less practical.
The Sig is DA/SA and the 10 lb DA trigger is superior to the SD9's 8 lb. The Sig's is smooth and with a clean break, add in the 4.5 lb SA trigger and it's heaven. The SD9 feels like there's some shards of glass inside there and you feel them grinding when you are pulling it. Can't stress enough how terrible the trigger is - cheap gun with a 50c trigger assembly in it, most likely.
Also, smaller and super light pistol, about twice the recoil impulse as my P226 (both 9mm). Recoil feels similar to my .40 USP. Overall, hated the pistol - it was a POS. I was so glad someone bought it on the EE.

If you have only shot semis in past, your will be shocked and appalled at the trigger. It is a self defense designed gun, SD, hence the heavy trigger. If you are an old revolver guy the trigger is just fine. Granted it is a bit long(intentionally) and has a poor reset but the gun is surprisingly accurate. I bought one for comparisons and aside from the trigger issue (8lb factory) the accuracy was great and it fit the hand well. Admittedly I did a bit of work to it, polishing the internals, and the Apex spring/trigger kits and now it breaks consistently at 4.25lb. More than acceptable in my opinion. As mentioned above, locating mags can be a bit of a chore and they are pricey when you do find them. I also added TruGlo Fiber Optic sights and it made a world of difference to these tired eyes. Am I pleased with it? Yes, very much but you have to realize what the guns was designed for. Its no target gun out of the box but for the money its just dandy. For about $100 additional I have it to the point where it is vary cabable, but now you are sneaking into the M&P price point so u need to be aware of that as well.

to that as well. Just seen a M&P range kit for $500, add another $200 for apex trigger upgrade. And Williams sights and your all set.
I paid $500 for a Sig SP2022 and it's fantastic, 4.5 lb SA trigger. I like the Sig bore axis and it's a polymer 'copy' of a slightly smaller P226 so the familiarity is there. Hit bullseye's with it out of the box. Best $500 I've ever spent. The SD9... ugh. Couldn't find anything I liked about it. Hopefully it works for the OP, but if you are used to a more premium gun - you will be disappointed. I was lucky enough to find the trigger spring kit but didn't think I'd keep the pistol anyway, so sold it with the pistol (at a loss).
