Smith and Wesson Warranty

I just bought myself the range kit brand new. Just wondering who actually registers their firearms with smith and wesson? or any other brands. I know we lack warranty services here (turn around time, etc), is their any benefits to registering as a canadian firearms owner?

I noticed some quality issues on my frame:
1) half of the beaver tail portion has a rough blemish (like sand paper was taken to it)
2) underneath the interchangeable grip, small portion of frame also has blemish not rough but as if someone took of the cast too quickly before it dried out

-They both seems like quality issues from the factory. But I'm not even going to bother taking it back to the store even though its still has the factory oil and never fired. I'm pretty sure the cosmetic defects won't effect the function of the gun and this is going to be my competition gun anyway, I expect it to get abused. HOWEVER, it sucks to buy a brand new pistol and find this imperfections and that SW would ship it out. I'll try posting pics later, but my camera won't focus properly.

You wouldn't think to check the portion of the frame underneath the interchangeable grips...for any potential buyers who will purchase locally make sure to check that portion of the frame so you can get the one in best condition.

Far from lacking warranty services, we have 2 factory warranty service depots in Canada - 1 in Ontario (Wortners) and 1 in BC (Murray Charlton Enterprises) as well as the importer, normally North Sylva.

I wouldn't really consider that a warranty issue. all the polymer frames have burrs etc from the molds. sand it down if you need to. But it sounds like they probably already did.

Doesn't North Sylva just send it to one of the warranty centers anyways.

Wortners is only a 3 minute drive from my house, George (Wortner) is a great old guy and an even better gunsmith..but don't be in a hurry, as far as I know it's just him, his son and his wife that run the shop....and they are ALWAYS busy !!

If you're gonna send your M&P in - prepare yourself for a looooong wait.

I lost the stupid #%&^ing firing pin block spring and waited almost 2 months!

Delivery dates, warranty work - they all have their own calenders (must be metric, heh, heh, heh ...)

Why didn't you just order one from Brownell's and save the wait?

Cause nobody, I mean NOBODY, had it in stock - in other words, everyone would be ordering it like me.

I called what seemed like every gun shop in Washington state, with no success - I could do nothing except hunker down and be forced to shoot my P226 TAC-OPS instead ....

S&W warranty claims are a nightmare here in Canada...mine for a busted extractor on 15-22 took 11 months through North Sylva. Biggest issue I had was they did not set expectations well when I started the whole process. It was always stories of oh it will be a few more weeks, maybe next month etc...

This is apparently a common experience for people, and had North Sylva set my expectations up front and tell to be prepared to wait a while it still would have sucked but at least I would have had an accurate sense of how long it would take. I tried Brownells as well but at the time they did not have the replacement parts. The extractor on my 15-22 blew off when the gun fired out of battery less than 30 rounds in.

It was a problem with those rifles when they first came out...the replacement was much more substantially built.

Why didn't you buy this Apex kit and use the spring and sell the USB?

The Apex USB is the best part of the whole kit. The gritty mushy feeling you feel with the factory trigger is the trigger bar pushing away the factory USB. Apex domed their USB, what a gunsmith will do if you opt for a trigger job. The result it a smooth and crisp trigger break with the Apex kit installed. Your advice is sound though the Apex competition or duty kit turns the M&P into a gun S&W should have produced at the outset. Personally, given how easy the gun is to work on I wouldn't bother with minor warranty issues for all the reasons demonstrated from the OP's experience. What should be and what is are not the same thing when it comes to warranty work and S&W is not alone in that regard.

Take Care

I didn't get the Apex kit for two reasons - the shop I took it to had already done a beautiful trigger job (polished & ground the trigger bar and firing pin block so as there was absolutely no grittiness at all), and secondly, nobody had as Apex kit in stock at the time either!

Yeah, the Apex kit kit gives you a slightly weaker spring & a shorter reset - but I'm pretty happy with the custom work done by the shop.

Man, and I have (2) new Smiths, I have heard from a friend that one of the service centres was slow as molasses on a simple repair. He got fed up and had it transfered to the other and it was done in a week.

I know a bunch of folks down here that had early issues and S&W was Johnny on the spot with fixes.

I tend to think issues in Canada are less S&W issues, and more Canadian centric...

Right nobody reported problems with 10 rd mags sent to California or Mass. I must have been on the Glock forum and not the M&P Forum. Canadians can't count to 10. We are so easily confused, as like what comes after nine. Ummmmmm not ten apparently cuz I have 10 rd mags that after I put nine rds in the mag the 10th one would not go in. I guess I should have skipped the 10th and just tried the 11th.

Take care
