Smith Enterprises sues customer over interwebz comments

Freedom of speech here is still free. Anyone can say what they want. But keep in mind that anti-libel laws (that have been around as long as freedom of speech rights) can, if proven, punish those that declare things that are knowingly false. Damaging a company's reputation without proof or out of spite can cost them a boatload of money in a hurry, so why wouldn't they want to defend themselves? Sure, this court action may cost SEI a lot of customers, but it could also cost them as much if the rumors go unabated. In broader terms, I think we're still an internet "frontier period" in that the days of widespread anonymity and saying/posting/uploading anything is eventually going to become much more controlled either through laws or the fear of being sued.

...Because in the end SEI is going to have to show/convince the courts that the allegations are in fact, not true? Meaning he's going to have to prove (expensively) out of his own pocket that defamation did happen? And not just one idiot's misguided opinion?

Dumbass vs Dumbass. . Cant fix stupid! Laugh2

that's pathetic lol should have been enough for a company rep to go on the board and rectify the situation, call the guy a douche, and leave a phone number for customers with concerns what else can you do?

It's worse - SEI alleged in federal court that the forum poster was shilling for a competing product and is a direct competitor libelling their receivers to sell his/her own receiver… except there is no competing product. The guy's just any other forum poster like you or I. The counter-suit alleges malicious filing and seeks large damages from SEI. From where I sit, I think the defendant has a very good chance of recouping all legal fees and being awarded sizeable damages, as is commonplace in US Federal Court.

Oh, and SEI has lost virtually all customer base at M14.com over this stupidity. And my business too after I read up on it.

It all started when he mocked my BF install videos because I showed people how to install the system with simple garage tools and the tool supplied in the BF kit. A few members jumped in to my defense. Laz went toe-to-toe with him for a while. Now he's claiming that he's going to pressure SAGE to sue Frank for copyright infringement and he will be a "STAR" witness.

Oh and he also ragged on me about supporting a Canadian company and destroying US jobs and all that yadda yadda yadda.....

Then I pointed out that he met with and sold stuff to CA military but that's okay. Not the other way around. I wonder if he remembers that the Garand being the predecessor to the M14, was invented by a Canadian?

There is nothing about a blackfeather that is similar to sage save for the materials they are made of and the rifles they fit. Sage has a bolt on back end too but nothing similar to a blackfeather. The oprod guide's are certainly unique to each chassis , as is the handguard mounting features.

Sounds like a lot of panty knotting and chest pounding spurred by internet drama and slipping margins/sales in the M14 biz LOL

I had a conversation with Ron, seemed like a nice enough fellow. Reading his posts though he clearly has some issues. At this point given his actions why would anyone want to risk dealing with such a vindictive loose cannon. It's like hearing a rattle snake doing it's shake, just walk away and don't get involved. One should never forget you reap what you sew.

I'm probably in the minority here but this guy goes off and makes a false statement is called on it.. Says it's bogus and rather then admit he is wrong continues to add to it..

The internet is not some great big curtain that protects #######s from getting kicked in the nuts... Smith is simply kicking him in the nuts..

Interesting in a completely macabre way to see someone sabotage their own business interests. I hope that Sage is wiser than Ron Smith and disassociates themselves from this rant.

These posts seem so far from rational that it makes me wonder if Ron is altogether well.
