Well, I installed my Smith mount #2024 today and i think that something is not right. Sitting on the rifle it seems like it is leaning to the right side (looking from the back) and slightly aiming to the left. I followed the instructions but i still couldn't get things to line up properly. Is there a trick to these things??? Anyone got any ideas??? My wife is out of town with the camera so pics to follow unless i get it corrected. I took these with my cell but they don't look to bad, surprisingly.

This is with the mount held on only by the main screw. When I tighten up the dovetail, it really pulls the mount back and raises the front which it already sit a little to the rear.

its also off center, this just look right.

Leaning is not a good result for a scope mount. I have never personaly had a problem with smith mounts and found them quite secure and true. I would recomend loosening all the screws and trying to align the mount down the center line of the rifle and dovetail before starting to torque up the screws. then torque front and rear and side equally trying not to overtighten one before the other. my guess is you have one overtorqued before seating the others. There is the slightest of chances you have a defective mount but coming from smith, it would be rare.

I did try and loosen all the screws like you said but still the same thing. I left out the main screw and tried to tighten down the dovetail and the fount screw, it off sets it more to the left. With all the screws out of it and just holding it to there, it doesn't sit level with the rifle (looking from the back, it sits clockwise just a degree or so). Is there a shim that I need to get???

I would have to see it to offer any good advice Katana, The only other thing I can think of checking without seeing it is there is a little channel on the rifle that a rigged part on the mount needs to line up in. It is on the bottom left side of the mount be low the side screw. If you have proper allignment on that part Im at a loss as to what the problem could be without seeing it. Maybe you just have one of those rare defective mounts.

sorry bud?????

1) Take the receiver out of the stock and install the mount using only the main side screw. Look to see if it lays flat on the side of the receiver on all surfaces with nothing holding it up. The other two points of mount are only there to stabilize the position secured by the side mount left and right, not to align it in any way left or right.

2) If it lies flat on the receiver, then the best you can do is follow the instructions carefully regarding the order of tightening things. The order and steps are critical otherwise the mount is not free to slide front and rear in the groove while you tighten down the dovetail in the stripper clip groove and then take up all slack with the offset bushing.

The main screw is not torqued down until the dovetail is properly located, tightened, and the eccentric bushing is turned to the right to take up all slack. The mount has to be free to slide in the groove while you tighten the dovetail otherwise it wont' move rearward, nor will the turning of the offset bushing have any tensioning effect unless the main screw is seated but not torqued.

Assuming the mount is lying flat on the side of the receiver, I doubt any slight lean would have any negative effect. After all, you are going to level the reticle to the horizon with the receiver sitting level.

Please post the results, including the arms mount if it comes to that. Sorry I can't offer advice, I'm a newb with scope mounting.

You have to have the main screw in, just finger tight, to keep the mount flat on the side of the receiver.

Naaa Kim, you need to let me have that mount there..........You offered it to me at the clinic - Should of accepted LOL

Kidding..........Sorry I cant help - Its rather hard if I cant actually see it - Bring it to the next clinic, shortly here at Thomas's place

Take care

Yeah, I should have sold you this problem for sure:p
Well after messing around with it some more last night I think i go it on right, somewhat:confused: I got it level and then there was a problem with the rings not lining up strait either:mad: That will teach me to buy cheap rings. Everything is on now and at the next meeting maybe tom ca look at it for me to see if i did everything right.

Ok, the wife is home now and got the camera back:D

Here is a over view of said rifle.

I did get everything to line up for the most part but...

It still sits a little of the right side plus its still slanted but I think Grizzlypeg is right, I don't think that will matter...

Over all I think I got it right but a day at the range and a bore sighter will tell that which I don't have yet...

looks good Kim
I see what you mean by the mount sitting to the right, but i am noticing from the pic that the scope seems to be centered to the receiver.
either way.... that rig is looking pretty sweet man ;)

How does it look right where the rear of the scope mount touches the stripper clip guide area of the receiver? (just above the dove tail insert) I have the same mount as yours and mine is mated perfectly at that small area of contact, no gaps at either edge. Also, on mine, there is as close as the eye can tell, an equal amount of the receiver showing on either side of the dovetail machined area where the mount touches and sits on it. How about yours? Just thinking this is another point of reference other than the rear sights.

Thanks Tom, it does look pretty frickin bad a$$. I think your right, the scope is fairly centered. You know, if it pretty close when i get i to the range I'll be happy with it...

The first time I mounted it, it wasn't even close as the firs pics showed. After messing with it and trying to get everything lined up, I gave up on the leaning it and just concentrated on getting it as flat to th receiver as i could. It is closer to the dovetail as I can get it so I'm going to get to the range and see how it does. How know, I may be back to square one:eek:
