I took my newly mounted m14 out back for what was hopefully going to be an enjoyable sighting in. After adjusting the scope as far as I could, the gun was still shooting six inches low at about 40 yds. The windage is dead on. The groups were about 1 inch, and I wasn't being that "precise"

The mount is the Smith mount 2014.

Luckily a gunsmith I know owed me a favour and he figured he might have to do some shimming on the back side where the dovetail for the stripper clip guide was is in order to get the scope lined up.

I'm wondering if anyone else had to do any shimming? Did anyone else have trouble getting the Smith mount to go on straight the first time?

I sort of had high hopes for this mount. I still do.

Ah, right to what may also be the problem (this has been in the back of my mind). It's a cheapee Simmons Master Series Prohunter 4-12 x 40. It's new and has never been on another gun.

The rings are Leupold.

Has anyone been fubar'ed by a Simmons scope?

rarely will the mount be a problem from what i understand, especially if you got a smith, but the scope thats on it!

I have had nothing but elevation and windage issues mounting a scope. I have tried three different scope mounts and three different scopes (all required shimming)!

Yup...scopes are tough to mount :D

I have the smith mount as well on my norc. Didn't have a problem with setting up the scope. Have you tried adjusting the 2 allen key set screws to try and get more front lift before fastening the side bolt? Just a thought....hope something works..these mounts are pricey and one would not expect any issues.

Actually, I have too much lift. The scope is looking too high, hence my bullets are hitting too low. Loosening the back would bring the front down as would loosening the front. If I loosen either of the allen keys much the mount isn't on there tight anymore.

I also had a post about how the dovetail didn't fit in the stripper clip guide slot. This required some sanding. I'm wondering if my Smith is an older one or something. It's one of the unmarked one's that they have for sale recently.

Has anyone had success with these unmarked smith mounts?
