doing some pistol research and saw new smith & wesson 22a for decent price ($360)
are these any good?

My youngest Son-in-law has had one for several years. It has been back to S&W twice, & still has a F.T.F. problem, nearly always with the second round in the magazine. (brand of ammo makes no difference) From there on down, it functions perfectly.

never shot one, talked about it to a friend, his opinion is that it's worse than the ruger / buckmark stuff which costs around the same.

The one I shot a lot that belonged to the Rent-A-Gun range ran well for me unless it was dirty. Being just one of a big number of rental guns meant that often it was dirty. But when clean it worked well for me and shot quite accurately.

But as a rental gun it just couldn't stand up to the punishment. It soon wore out and they don't plan on getting another.

Meanwhile the Rugers they have just keep on performing like the Energizer bunny. One has been a rental gun on and off for both this range and the previous rental range and has almost 10 years of actual rental use. If that doesn't say something I don't know what does. They've fixed a few things with it but the major parts are still performing in fine style.

They recently added a Buckmark to the fleet so it'll be interesting to see how it holds up over the next year.

If you like the 22A I wouldn't let the fact that it could not keep up for more than a year of rental use bother you too much. A year there is like three lifetimes of one person use.

i bought a S&W 22A as my first gun. i found that it was a bit of a snoty gun did not like any other ammo other than federal and CCI/Blazer. ever since i fed it that ammo it has performed with out complaining and have put about 5000 round through (in the 6 months i have owned it) plus i let other people in the club shoot it on a regular basis. so far no problems. the only problem people have is that they done push the mag all the way in. i do recommend it. since it is a failry decent price gun it cost me 350$

you know, i have gotten somewhat interested in this model recently, mostly because i haven't actally had the chance to handle one at the range. the model 41 is wonderful, and most of the High Standard stuff is a few notches down. but at those prices, one could easily get the model 22A plus a good centerfire pistol.

i will say that while the ruger and buckmark guns are good to shoot, they feel small and oddly balanced in my hands.
