Smith & Wesson 686 .357 (pictures)

I use Flitz polish on mine.

it seems to be almost like a heat treatment has been done on it from first look. i'll give it a go and keep you posted.

That's what the guy at the store told me when I bought mine. Heat treated hammer and trigger.

Personally I like the dirty look of'em. Makes for a nice contrast on a clean, shiny gun.

aka-jdub: Congrats on the new revolver. I'm sure it will bring you many years of enjoyment.

Question - my 686 came with the front sight being black (which I find a little hard to use in low light or against darker targets). I see both pictured here with red sight up front. Is that factory or add on? Either way what is it called and where do I get it?

FWIW, I replaced my red ramp front sight with a McGivern gold bead sight that I ordered from the S&W website. If I can remember where I put I put it, I'd trade it for your black one if you want. I had my sights 'installed' by a 'smith with ham fists who peened the crap out of the roll pin holding it but with the proper tools it shouldn't be a tough job.

Great gun. The S&W are very nice, but from an aesthetic/subjective point of view, I prefer the cylinder release "pivot" of the GP100 over the "push-slide" of the S&W. In the end it was this that made me go for a pair of GP100's over the 686.

Both guns felt virtually identical to me in terms of trigger and grip. The only thing I miss was the orange on the front blade. Reminds me of half life.

i wouldn't be in a hurry to get the trigger or hammer polished. i did one side of the trigger while watching indy get ousted last night. barely noticed a change at all for the time i was on it. those two pieces will be the last to shine up i'm betting.

SL Variant speedloaders

In order to give a proper use to the S&W revolver you should buy some SL Variant speedloaders to fit your model.
They are a bit expensive, but uncomparable to other speedloaders in quality and reliability.
