last night i took my smith to the range after not shooting it for about 2 years and i shot 24 rounds of med velocity cast bullets and noticed that the blueing on the cylinder was burning off! the blueing was coming off the side of the cylinder and on the unfluted part of it, not inside of the flute itself!
this has never happed before and puzzles me to why it would start now after about 2000 rounds! i could see if they were really hot magnum loads, but they were not!
anyone got any conclusions to this...
 
Something fishy here.....proper bluing(which S&W are quite noted for) should not peel off as it is like a dye and not capable of peeling....is it possible that you have some fouling on top of bluing and you either haven't got to the bottom of, or, you have cleaned/wore right through the bluing? Did you buy this gun new, or second hand and someone may have refinished it improperly?
 
i bought this gun brand new back in 1992! the spots are right to bare metal
these spots are directly below the top strap when the round is ignited, so i believe they are gas burns! its funny because i was showing off the gun before shooting and then everyone was in disbelief after shooting 24 rounds!

This is very bizarre...I've never seen bluing come off like that. The only logical explanation is that something must have happened to the finish during storage.
 
Sounds like a quick note or call to S&W is in order. They are very good about customer care in most cases, and it doesn't hurt. It may be part of a process flaw that they are aware of but want to keep quiet in an effort to fend off the onslaught from less than legitimate claims.

i phoned smith&wesson usa and they too were shocked, but as soon as i said i was from canada they just said well get your gunsmith to take a look at it and i am not sure we can do anything for you being the guns age and everything!

how did you remove these vapourized lead deposits?
