I am thinking of buying a S+W M+P 9mm what are your comments good or bad about this firearm.

Feels really good in my hands with the small grip and shoots well.
Trigger is quite gritty but is getting better as time goes on - only shot about 750 rounds through it.
The mag safety is a real annoyance to me.
Field stripping is not nearly as easy as my XD.
Extra mags are on the expensive side and hard to find.
All in all I think it's a good gun.

S&W M&P Pistol

Handled one yesterday at the local shop. Was in 9mm and had the medium grip installed. Fit my hand well, felt nice, pointed well. I am used to the Glock trigger which I think I like better than the trigger on the M&P, although they are very similar. While I wouldn't feel disadvantaged buying the M&P given preference I'd still take the Glock, albeit at a slightly higher price.

1500 rounds through mine, pleasant to shoot even with NATO loads, hasn't had a single problem from day one. It drops the brass in nice little clusters, the trigger improves greatly with use and it's VERY easy to shoot fast and accurately with. I'd actually prefer it to a Glock, fits better and has better sights and the trigger as mentioned does improve with use. Also they're an excellent price for the quality. The only downer is that you'll have a hard time getting spare mags. They don't seem to be making enough to keep up with demand. Oh yes, and it's completely ambi - you can switch the mag release to the right side (for us righties)

X2 (same for .40)

I own both a G17 and the M&P9. Fit and finish are excellent on both but my M&P9 has some machining marks at the front of the slide where it tapers and my M&P9 has some drag marks at the top of the slide from being used with a kydex holster whearas the Glock hasn't shown any marks (yet). The Novaks sights are better on the M&P. The medium grip size works best for me on the M&P but I would have preferred to use the large insert but it felt like there was a big bulge in my palm swell, ie. they didn't make the grip panel larger in circumference, they just made the back of the grip that contacts the palm swell fatter, and this felt awful for me. Both are accurate, reliable and easy to shoot. I am not sure if it's just a matter of trigger time or not as I've only got about 1000 rounds into my M&P9 but, so far, my preference is still with the G17. This may change as I spend more time with the M&P9.....FWIW, other G17 owners who have shot my M&P9 are impressed by it and some have said that they liked it over their G17's. YMMV....

Also, if you buy a M&P before the end of the year Smith and Wesson has a mail in promotion for two free magazines!!

I have one in 9mm and like it a lot :)

It's a very nice gun for the price; great sights, nice trigger, comes w/ 3 interchangable backstraps, light and looks nice as well.

Never shot the M&P but got a chance to handle it at the store recently. Fit and finish isn't top rate, but seeing how this is one of the cheapest semi-autos on the market (mot counting for Norinco) I wasn’t expecting it to be. I found the ergonomics to be pretty good. The trigger is a typical DAO – long and somewhat gritty. Overall, if you're on a budget and don't mind the DAO trigger, it seems like a reasonably good choice.

I find the (slide) finish to be pretty good... Sure slide/frame fit isn't as good as on Beretta or Sig, but that doesn't bother me one bit... I'm a SA/DA guy but I really like the (consistant) trigger on the M&P, for 6.5lbs (acording to S&W) it's more than acceptable IMO.

I like mine a lot, field stripping is easy, lock slide back, use some little tool to rotate the yellow lever and then rotate the slide lock like you do on a Sig and the slide slips off. I find that you have to put the sight right over the target as opposed to just under it.

I've had the pleasure to fondle and shoot both the 9 and 40 .
The are excellent pistols , especially considering the price .
I have seen a magazine break but S&W replaced it no problem .
Personally the only thing I would like is a front fibre optic sight and an adjustable rear sight .
Is it better than a Glock , no , just different .
Great gun , left me with a possitive feeling .

Just took mine out for the first time (M&P9) Put 250 rds through it. Love it but it flings brass everywhere! Arms, head, face, whatever. Other than that, it's awsome. Really positive Rx to it. Couple of other fellas tried it too and they're big fans. Even the wife loved it.

I had that problem but only with the light aluminum casings of CCI Blazer Ammo.
Real brass ends up in a nice pile, I guess its due to the weight of the casing or something

I think its the best looking polimer frame pistol .
but thats all .i rilly wanted to like it ,because im in the market for a new 9mm
i had the chance to fondle one at the gun shop and give her a very very good looking over .
my 1st hand gun was a glock 17 -9mm (liked it).
2nd hand gun springfield xd 40 love it .
3rd hand gun kimber tactical custom II 45 acp absolutly dreammy.
4th hand gun smith and wesson k22-masterpiece target pistol 17-3 cant wait to get her home from the store so i can try her out .
i sold the glock 17 because its rilly so simple and quite frankly (borring)and after learning to shoot and gaining some experiance shooting ,I descoverd somthing called a natural grip angle (but only when i got the xd ).
although the glock is not for me ,and it is so simple and borring i think its quality is superior to the M&P and neither come even close to the xd , for me the xd is with out a doubt the best .
I thought the M&P felt very weak and toyish ,crappy trigger ,and felt that the slide should track alot smoother that it does .
I do think the M&P felt very comfortable though the angle is all wrong for me .
i've heard good reviews and bad reviews .
i have not shot one and likley
never will.
i will not buy this gun

Hey BJ hill

I just got an M&P 9 and have had it out to the range a couple of times. So far I think it's an awesome pistol. I'm not so accurate with it, but I had a friend of mine out with me and he was getting ten out of ten on target, so I know it's me not the pistol. Remember though, it's a police pistol, not a target gun.

The trigger has had some complaints, but it's a fairly light pull and you will get used to the built in trigger stop pretty quickly. I've handled glocks and it's no better or worse, just different!

It doesn't field strip as quickly as a glock, but we're not aiming for speed here anyway. The gun was designed so that you HAVE to open it up and look in the chamber as you deactivate the sear. Just an added measure of safety. After that, the disassembly is as simple as a glock would be

As far as reliability goes, I've had about 300 rounds through it now. They all loaded, went bang, and extracted into fairly neat piles. Most of the brass would wind up on the shooting bench and I wouldn't even have to pick it up!

If you hurry up, Smith and Wesson has a promotion on where they will send you two free mags if you buy the pistol between October 1st, 2007 and sometime in December (?) Online it says the deal is only available in the states, but I've seen a thread on here mentioning that they have extended the deal to Canadians. You can't beat the price. Williams Arms in Port Perry, ON has them for $625 in either 9mm or .40, which is less than S&W suggests on their website!

If you want a pistol that is fun to shoot, looks cool and will make other shooters envious, GO FOR IT!

This gun is awesome. I've had one for a long time and everyone is right, the trigger improves quickly and it has been 100 percent reliable with all the ammo I have tried. on mine the fit and finish was just as good as the glock but the ergonomics on the mp9 are leaps and bounds above the glock. As for take down it is much safer, but if you wanna be rebellious you can choose to take it down same way as the glock (you have to use an empty mag if you have the mag safety) But I wouldn't suggest that because they put that safety measure in there to protect you so take advantage. Mags arent that bad, I just waited and smith and wesson sends you deals by email every once in a while and I got them for like 25 plus like 6 bucks shipping.

I'm an 'all steel, plastic has no place on a gun' type of guy. But this may just be a duty weapon for me at some time in the future so I thought I should buy one to see how it worked out.

I wandered down to 'Toys'r'Us and came away with a 40 cal. (Gunsmiths only sell steel guns)

The barrel/slide fit is excellent and the finish of the pistol generally is also good. The trigger pull is a little heavy for precision work but I can keep a 2 inch group at 10m no problem. (The gun is capable of much better) 3 dot sights are very nice.

The slide stop is sharp and grazes my thumb when I shoot.

The hinged trigger looks like it should feel horrible, but is not noticeable in use. In fact it is good.

My 'el Presidente' time is about 15% more than with my Edge. But then it is new and I have only 200 rounds thru it.

The real down side for me is that the plastic grip is too smooth and if wet, or used with sweaty hands, I can see it being a problem.

The only other problem is that, as an 'all steel please' gun owner, I have to admit that I rather like it !!!
