Smith & Wesson M&P or Gen 4 Glock 21

Ok so I'm trying to decide what one of these two pistols I should get for my first restricted. What I would like from the community is for people that own or have shot both pistols, what the better choice for a first would be. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
 
I own both a Glock 17 (gen 3.5) and M&P 9. Stock, the Glock is better. I recently installed an aftermarket trigger modification in the M&P, and appreciate how easy it is to take apart, which is also what Glocks are known for. In the end, you can't go wrong with either.
 
I think I'm leaning more towards the Glock. I can pick one up from police ordnance fairly cheap, then spend what I saved on upgrading the guide rod, and buying all my reloading dies and kit needed for 9mm.

They are out of gen4 21's at the moment. You may have to wait a bit.
 
I own an M&P 9 and have shot a few glocks, I really like my M&P and the deciding factor for me was the ergonamics of it, it just fits my hands better. At the end of the day they are extremely similar. I did end up putting the apex CAEK in mine because the range and carry kit I bought had a really heavy trigger pull.

At the end of the day they are both durable and reliable guns so my recommendation would be to get whatever you can find cheapest and if you end up with buyers remorce just hawk it on the EE and buy the other.
 
The M&P is a great gun. Its downfalls in my opinion are:

- Stock trigger is just horrible, easy fix with an apex kit though.
- The 10 round unpinned mags are brutal to load by hand, I need manlier fingers lol. Plus they are hard to insert fully loaded on a closed slide.

The good:

- Ergonomics = awesome. Atleast in my hands, which are girly as previously established, it just fits me.
- Stock sights are top notch, Novak i believe?
- The finish on the slide is incredibly strong. Im a 500+ rounds in (i know not a lot) but i haven't even marked it.
- Adjustable back straps are another big win.

The glock has more then a few of the same points and better points. I picked up the glock and it wast right for me. I am sure I will buy one someday but for now the M&P just fits the bill for me. There are points I am missing yes, but im at work and typing this on my phone lol.

Go find both at a gun shop and compare side by side, thats what I did. :D
 
I'm torn. I want a Glock for the aftermarket support, but the M&P fits me much better. Like, not even by just a little bit. The contours of the M&P grip hit all the right spots and put the sights right where I expect them to be. It feels more natural. Add in the value of the range and carry kit and the quality of the Apex parts and it's a definite winner.

But I'm not going to make the decision too quickly, Wolverine is hosting a Glock Days session at the Brandon range and apparently some Glock folks will be there, so it seems like the perfect opportunity to get some real expert tips on Glock shooting and see how I do when working with the pros.
 
Go with whatever feels better in your hand and has the correct length of pull. M&P triggers are pretty bad - you will have to factor in the upgrade.

I was at Wolverine a couple days ago. 1911's felt like I was grabbing a sock full of coal. I really wanted to like the Ruger SR1911. For me, the Gen4 G21 feels the best in my hand. The stock trigger is not mushy and is predictable.
 
had the m&p 45 and it was ok, it was REALLY snappy with factory 230 grain loads. Much better with 185 grain bullets. The glock is less snappy and also find it very accurate. Out of the box, the m&p has better sights, but it gives the option of getting 13 rnd pinned mags for easier loading. I agree as well that the m&p 45 mags are absolutely horrible to load.
 
Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers have said there are 2 modern 45 acp pistols worth considering, the HK45 (which they designed) and the M&P45. The M&P with an Apex trigger kit (in my experience nice but not necessary, you can make great improvements to the trigger with some 1,000 grit and metal polish) and an Uplula is more available and costs less than the HK.
 
Its a tough decision for sure. I'm mulling a m&p in 9mm and a gen 4 glock 17. They're both good, the only things i dont like about both is the way they're both taken down. The m&p NEEDS the integral mounted tool, loose that and you're up poop creek. The glock has those two little nubbins you have to manipulate to get the slide off. The buttons and lever on both are good, they both fit my hand well, the sights arent bad, and I dont mind either trigger. Test them both out at a range if yours stocks them for shooting.

M&P. Reliable, cheap parts, easy to work on etc.

Pick which one you like - you won't go wrong with either. If you like/need the features offered by the newer designed M&P then your choice is obvious. The Apex FSS trigger or just the regular Apex trigger installed in the gun places the M&P in a different league.

Hi there,

My buddy has a Glock 22 and I've shot it and the 17 plenty, but I happen to find the M&P just fits into my hand perfectly. Both are fantastic options, but it really does come down to which feels better in your hand.

As for aftermarket parts, Glock has simply been around much longer then the still relatively young M&P. Give it a year or so and you'll see plenty more aftermarket bits for the M&P, especially as LE agencies jump on the 'homegrown' band wagon.

I'm intrigued by the APEX trigger upgrade. Where can they be found??
 
i've been having the exact same dilemma... m&p45 or Glock 21... tough choice for sure! i have an m&p9 already and love it so of course that makes me lean the m&p direction. but i almost want the glock just for variety's sake (as well as it being a great pistol as well) better shoot both first and then take it from there!

of course, if i had the means i'd just buy both.... ah dreams
 
Once a m&p can put a hundred k or more rounds thorugh it or go a few k without cleaning and malfunction, it's reliable. Until then it's not.
