Hi Guys:

Just got my first pistol home (well, on Monday) and I'm having trouble removing the "key" from the behind the magwell/grip. Apparently this needs to come out to change the grip, but it sure doesn't want to budge.

The manual says turn a quarter turn (or half?) and pull, but it does not turn at all.

Are these keys normally so bloody tough out of the box?

Anyone have ideas that DONT include the words vice, pliers or hammer?

yes, place the gun with a 'tool' sitting on an edge of the table (muzzle down) and turn the gun...makes sense?

btw you only need to remove the 'tool' if you want to change grips; for disassembly you can use any object.

They are a b_tch to take out at first but will loosen up after a few removal. It's more of a half turn and not a quarter turn then pull up. Placing it at the edge of the table works well too..

If it's really tight, give it a squirt with WD 40 then heat it with a hair dryer and it will turn easily after a few minutes of heating.

Obviously, don't melt anything but the hair dryer shouldn't get hot enough for that anyway.

My first one was tight, but my new one is down right civilized, 2 fingers only. What Rev is yours - it's moulded into the inside or the dust cover, ahead of the trigger. My old one was Rev 'N' this one just has a block of dots inside the dust cover.

I needed to use a pair of pliers with rubber tape to get mine out the first time. When I looked at the "key" / take down tool, you could see where the plastic had fused togeather and was broken on the first turn. Ater 15 field strips, it comes out really smooth. If you use pliers, be careful not to mark up the take down tool...mine now has a small scratch due to fumble fingers. Good luck.

This is a Rev. N model.

Got the key out...with a significant effort. Ejected the mag, placed it butt-down over the edge of my kitchen counter and gave it hell. Easier the second time out, but the 3rd 4th, etc, still tight as the second time. Might just leave this alone unless I really need to change grips.

No marks on the key, but my kitchen countertop has a new blemish (Cheap Home Depot crap)

For my first restricted, and first handgun, I thought I'd be more excited. Maybe I'll get into it when I finally find time to visit the range.

Sure is pretty to look at :) Thanks again for the help!

Rev N guns are pretty much good to go - you won't have the mag drop issue, or in my experience, any other 'issues'. I missed it so much after I traded it that I bought another! That's the only time in 20 years or so that I've done that with anything other than a 1911. Excellent pistol.
