What can the collected wisdom here tell me about Smith & Wesson Model 50's in 45ACP? I don't see much on line about them
What would be a fair price for one, wood and metal in very good shape, 6.5" barrel. I don't have pictures of this one.

Adjustable sights with target grips. Large frame, upgraded model of 1917 I believe, but that's about all I know of these. They don't seem to be plentiful, there's not even one on gunbroker

Does this gun have fixed or adjustable sights? I'm assuming it was made before Model #'s were designated in 1957...
Anything else about it will narrow it down.

The model 50 is not a .45ACP as the model 50 is built on the J frame. They are chambered in .38 Special. They are called the Chief's Special Target (CST). They were basically a model 36 with adjustable sights. Very uncommon. They may be marked as a model 50, or model 36, and some were unmarked. Are you sure you are looking at a model 50?

Are you thinking of the 25-2? It's an N frame in .45ACP and available in a 6.5" barrel. If that's it then one in good shape I'd say would be $750-$1000 or so.

It says right on the barrel that its a model 50, and 45ACP

Here's the 25-2...it says "45 CAL MODEL 1955" though. Are you sure what's on the barrel? The Model 50 is definitely not a 6.5" .45ACP...as mentioned above it's a J Frame .38.

I don't think S&W made any other .45ACP revolvers in 6.5" barrel length other than the 25-2. You'll have to post pictures for us to have a better idea.
This guy's out to lunch. It turns out that S&W did make another .45acp revolver in 6.5" barrel length. The Model 1950 is similar to the later 25-2 but with a lighter profile barrel. I had no idea. As a shooter, the heavier barrelled 25-2 might be better (might) but the 1950 is rarer.

There's good info here: smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/324010-model-1950-45-target.html

TJ.....

The 1950 .45 Target Model has a light barrel & was the pre-model 26
They did indeed make them in .45 ACP & .45 colt being the scarcer one.
It was the 5 screw sideplate & had a 6-1/2" barrel.
In excellent condition the US price is listed $1750.

They also made them with a heavy barrel as well, with the "Target trigger & hammer"
About 1956 they deleted the upper sideplate screw....

Hope this helps, & as stated the Model 50 was a model 36 with adjustable sights!
My info is from the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" 3'rd edition....

Cheers, Chris.:)

Love those older Smiths! Any idea what the stocks (grips) on it are? It would likely have come with diamond targets stocks from the factory. Might be worth sending for a factory letter.
