I have a Government Model 1917 in .45acp but I'd love to find one of those 1950's. You're a lucky guy OP! Too bad about the aftermarket grips but Ebay is a great resource for stuff like that.

From what I can tell, the Target version became the Model 26 in 1957. The Model 1955 became the Model 25.

From what I have learned since my initial post, there was also a military version of this, with the 5.5 inch barrel, and fixed sights. These Tradeex barrels are for that model, and would not be compatible with the rear sights on the target model.
I was shooting it with 45ACP and moon clips, and as the picture shows, it's nicely accurate. I have a bunch of 45Auto Rim brass on the way so I can do without the moon clips.

I believe the military model meant for those barrels became the Model 22 in 1957.
