Basically, that's the answer my son got from the vendor but I'm also having second thoughts accepting it.

You nailed it.
Got mine from the same place as the OP. Upper/lower fit is really good, looks a lot closer than the pic above. Front sight index is perfect. And it shoots pretty good. I did find the vendor's communication a little chaotic though. For me that carries more weight than any manufacturing tolerance. I keep getting emails about their latest deals, but unless I happen to be in the GTA and can deal in person, forget it. The experiences shared here serve to confirm my instinct.

For any of you buying online or otherwise not in person, I'd have the vendor send photos of the exact unit they're going to mail you before accepting it. That way you can ensure you won't get one with this problem.

I got mine too, from another dealer that hasn't been mentioned

Has a not as bad a gap as OP but still visible, mismatched upper and lower anodizing (the upper looks NEA blurple), pretty sure it's out of the same batch. Bought about 2 weeks or so ago and picked up today. Happy for the price I paid, but if i paid any more, I'd send it right back to SW and tell them to fix it.

Can you measure the gap with shim gauges? It's perfectly normal to have a gap, it all depends how large it is.
