Smith & Wesson SD9 VE Review

I keep wanting to buy one when I see one on EE just because but than I tell myself I already have a Glock and need to spend more time with it lol

Nice I am downgrading to and SD( as I know they are great pistols (downgrading price wise :p) but still bought the fancy one from CDNGUNWORX. Need money for school so the sig p226 is going to go to a new home.

Great review BTW! The only problem I have is it seems to be a PITA to find a holster for these for some reason...

I bought my SD9VE because of this review.

I picked one up for $319.00 plus tax, first non 22 handgun I have bought so far and I like the gun,
I think a spring and trigger job and it will be with me for some time.

12/17

I was finally able to get to the range and put 300 rounds (150 - 124g AE and 150 - 124g Centaure remanufactured - holy crap was it snappy!!) through the SD9. I used AIWB gear under a knit shirt.

Total rounds: 789
Stoppages: I stopped counting (all failure of the slide to lock back due to my grip)
Malfunctions: 1 - DF

FASTest’s:

1) Cold 5.34 Clean - I was quite happy with that considering my lack of range time lately.
2) 6.22 +1B = 7.22 - I caught the edge of the mag in my shirt which cost me at least a second then I blazed the body shots to catch up, and let one go high.
3) 5.81 +2H = 7.81 - I should have shot the three FAST’s back to back when my hands were still warm.

I had one malfunction with the gun today. It was a double feed while shooting weak hand only. I marked the mag and then proceeded to shoot another 120 or so rounds SHO and WHO and could not get the gun to repeat the malfunction. It occurred while shooting some very snappy 124g remanufactured ammo. Racking the slide to load the gun with this ammo was noticeably more clunky, and that rough feeling I mentioned in previous posts was more pronounced. The cases on this ammo looked like they were nickel plated, so maybe the SD9 just does not like this type of ammo. I had no problems with brass case.

I was able to squeak out a 271 on the Advanced Super Test, but 15 Yards was bad! Really bad! I also could not get the gun to group on 25 yard B8’s which was really frustrating. Below was the best 25 yard target I could get from the four I fired. Admittedly, it was not great weather to be shooting groups and the gun is still shooting low (I tried various amining points to compensate) but I remain unimpressed with 25 Yards accuracy with the SD9. I moved on to movement drills just to try to get warm for the rest of the session.

This gun reminds me of the cheap belly guns of another era. Good for man sized targets 10 yards and in. Other than for a pipe that goes bang I am not feeling for it I am afraid. For not much more you can pick up a new M&P FS, a gun with far more potential.

Take Care

I was wondering about the “belly gun” comparison myself when I bought the gun. In essence, S&W wanted to make an inexpensive defensive type pistol that is easy for novice shooters to operate. However, I think their exection is such that the quality is a little better than their long distant “belly gun” relatives.

With regards to the accuracy of the gun, there are a few things going on that really negatively affect it:

1) The shooter. I’m a consistent low 90’s B8 shooter with my competition guns. I lack the real patience needed to do much better.

2) The stock sights are huge and not designed for precision.

3) Well, that trigger. Taken for what it was designed for, a self defence gun, the trigger has a lot of plusses from a safety perspective. It is much like a DA trigger in practice. But it is not a target trigger and requires quite a bit of skill at the 25 yard line, at least more than I have anyway. :)

Otherwise I think it’s a fine pistol. It has a lot going for it, and time will tell how well it stands up to 2000 rounds without any additional cleaning or lubrication.

Well so much for my SD9, traded it off on a Girsan MC-28, I liked the SD9 it didn't like me and MC-28 feels much nicer in the
hand, almost like it was made for me. Now after I pick it up in the next day or so I will have to see if I can hit a quarter
sheet of plywood at 10 meters.

Will also pass on the upgraded S&W Smegma. Thanks for the information.

I think S&W is just trying to fill a market niche in the US with this gun for those who want to carry concealed or have a "truck" or home defense gun but have little interest in guns other than having one for personal defense. So they keep the trigger heavy for these casual shooters who will not practice or become proficient so have no need for a light precise trigger. The slim frame lends itself to concealment. They keep the price low for these entry level buyers.

Was finally able to handle an SD9VE and operate the trigger at my LGS. The feel of the pistol in my hand, and the fact that I didn't mind the trigger led me to purchase a used one off the EE here. Just waiting on the transfer to go through. This will be my second handgun (sold my first one for reasons -.-) and I'm looking forward to getting out with this little guy and seeing how we work together. After reading this thread it helped me in my decision to go for this sidearm. That and I'm a sucker for the "redheaded stepchild", odd ball items ><. Reading and hearing that M&P9 and G19 holsters usually fit, I may know a guy whom could help me out to find one that fits ;) Just wish it came with the 3 mag deal :'(

I got mine with the 3 mag deal!!! I was at my local gun shop on Friday night trying to get a holster but the m&p holster did not fit well enough. It did fit but not well enough to spend $100 or so
