SMK - .224 vs .308

is there somthing i am missing with the SMK line of bullets for the .224 vs the 308? i was in wss the other day grabbing some reloaidng supplies since my local store didnt have what i was after..

a box (100) of 175gn .308 is priced at $44 dollers a box while a box of 77gn .224 (50) is priced at 21.xx, thus making them $42 per 100... which to me seems way off. since with most other product lines iv purchased the 224 seems to com in around just over 1/2 price of their line of 308..

so is wss out to lunch or is there somthing i am missing? at this rate shooting a .223 really isnt much savings over shooting my 308 :/

so whats the scoope? is ther a good place to buy from that sells the 224 at a more reasonable price?
 
yup i know match grade bullets are pricey, thats not my question... i just wanted to know if there was a reason sierras are as much for 223 as they are for .308 as compared to say hornidy where the .223 stuff is just over 1/2 price of their 308 match stuff..

i guess my real question is WSS out to lunch or is it somthing to do with sierra them selfs for the near identical price?
 
Perhaps the .308 stuff was older stock, which could account for the difference in price. I bought some 210 Bergers last spending and they were about $55/100. By the way, check out Matrix Bullets, they are Canadian made, easily shoot with Bergers, and are competitively priced.
 
I pay 17.99 for a box of 50 smk 80 grains.

I pay 43.94 for a box of 100 smk 190 grains.


I think we are paying a little bit of a premium for the 80 and 90 grain 224s as compared to say the run of the mill 69 grain smks.

I think this is the case. The really heavy .224 bullets are probably a lower volume item compared with anything in the more conventional weight range for that calibre.
 
Longer bullets cost more in material and work!

See it this way, the gilding metal cost and manufacturing cost is proportional to caliber caliber while the bullet weight is proportional to the square of caliber.

Caliber ratio
5.56mm / 7.62mm = 0.729

Bullet cost ratio
34$ per 5.56 bullet / 45$ per 7.62 bullet = 0.755

So you're simply paying for what you're shooting!
If you want to save money shoot shorter and smaller caliber bullets!
Shooting long/high sectional density bullets is expensive because of the larger amount of bullet surface.

thanks guys i guess that makes sense, its been quite a while since i have bought .224 match stuff, and as i spend most of my time here in the precission forum, it looks like lots of guys are shooting the heavy 224s, so i figured it was commen enough that wasnt any thing special..

well learnt somthing new haha
 
Supply and demand, it is obvious the 224 projectile should be cheaper to manufacture, less copper, less lead....i loaded up on 69gr smk, they can be found in bulk for cheap and shoot good out to 600 yards...
