Hello,
After a thourough strip down of my No.1 Mk.III, I've noted some odd markings I'd like to express here.
Firstly, the bolt. The rifle is a 1917 G.R. Enfield Sht Lee III with two horizontal strikes beside the III looking like an equals sign without these brackets ( = ). Markings on the bolt, the back of the bolt is stamped with the matching serial number as the reciever and nosecap. However, there are interesting markings on the bolt. Under the bolt handle is the number set of 475. On the bolt back is a symbol that looks like 2 crossed flags. Under the bolt handle, right before the bolt knob is a 7 pointed star with the letter A inside. The same appears on the cocking piece, with MA52 underneath. The bolt head, which looks like it matches the bolt, has on the right side of the top knob, MA55, with what lookes like a "knife cut" capitol P under it. By knife cut I mean it is not stamped or electropenciled, but looks like someone drew first an upright stick, then a half moon, to make a P. The rifle rear site has a 7 pointed star with a 7 inside it, and what looks like a loop or 0 stamped on the top star point. above it is marked P75. There are also a line of 4 broad arrows stamped in a line under the rear site, along with two struck out letter codes, and a stamped code, stating a "J" above 31726 in what looks like old typeset. This rear site goes up to 20, with a rear adjustable windage site. The receiver is marked with a crown above P7 E. and above it, under the rear hand guard piece, is the matching serial no. again. more markings are here as well. On the left hand side of the rear-most part of the barrel, on the "swell" is marked as follows:
Crown
G.R.
Crossed Flags
P
Crown
64
E
'29
To the immediate right of that string is marked:
Crown
A5
E
On the left hand side of the reciever is marked
Crown
Crossed Flags
P
To the left of that is a crown and a 1 on the right hand side then E
Under this is written:
A down pointing straight arrow
FFD
35
Under this, right above and to the right of the venting hole, is marked D 31.
On the right hand side of the reciever is marked, at the top:
Crown
E
29
Under that, right against the metal "lip" is
Crown
P7
E
Finally, just above the swell on the receiver flowing into the barrel,
Left hand side:
J
Right hand side:
6
Just under the rear site, is marked on the Barrell
HV
SC
And that pretty much covers it, other than, on the opposite side of the hand guard as the date and Sht LE III marking, is as such
Crown
A5 '25
' 34
Sideways facing the buttstock is a Crown, followed by K5 then E
'38
Underneath this string is written
A L
22
15698
The trigger left side is marked
Crown
A3
13
To the left of that on the magazine release tab is another straight arrow.
My camera is out of commisson and these numbers are mostly tiny.
Please, any information on this rifle would be really welcome!
I picked it up for Three and a Half at a gunshow a few months ago. Shot it at the range in competition on iron sites, scored 8 of 10 shots in a 6 inch black target center, while standing freehand @ a target set at 125 yards with rear site set to the "2" mark.
Cheers!
