SMLE No.1 Mk III stock repair

Hey fellow milsurp enthusiasts,

I was firing Sara Lee and noticed she would not #### because of a big crack in the stock. What are my options to get the most life out of her with the stock she has before I find her something new. She is a peddle scheme so I do not want to lose her.

It means that different manufacturing of certain rifle components were 'peddled out' to different manufacturers to supposedly speed up production during the Great War when larger manufacturers could not keep up. My rifle is from Standard Small Arms.

She looks like she is split from stem to stern. How good are you at wood working? Lou would have a field day fixing that stock.

If the forend is marked as nicely as the butt stock, I would gladly give it a go. that is, if it has the "C broad arrow" mark, if the serial number is on it, then by all means send me this rifle. Otherwise, I'd say let's find a forend in good shape and let's start bedding it... Does the action / barrel also show the C broad arrow mark?

The pictures show up much worse after uploading to photobucket. The only markings I can find are as shown in the pictures. The stock has been sanded and redone at some point. It appears there is a broad arrow on the stock with some circles at the base, along with an ED as one letter. There is a C and broad arrow on the butt.

A rifle which shoots as sweetly s a good Lee-Enfield, a Standard (of all things, with Canadian markings), just HAS to have a nice name.

And it should be a NICE name, too.

You only call a rifle something like "Corpse-Reaper" or "Hel's Tooth" if you live on Lutefisk and have one of those horny helmets like in the movies. In that case, anyway, you have to carry a Krag.

Tradition: that's what it's all about.
