Hi Gents: Can someone tell me if there is a difference between a SMLE No.1 Mk III and a Lee Enfield No. 1 Mk III, or are they the same thing? I need to know because I want to order an after market scope mount for a young lads first gun(.303) that replaces the rear sight I believe. The part however states for SMLE No.1 Mk III.

Thanks in advance.

Doug

SMLE means Short Magazine Lee-Enfield. They're the same. Most of the aftermarket(there isn't anything else) scope mounts aren't that great. Check the headspace before you do anything.

Smle

The scope mounts for the SMLE/#1Mk3* are the Weaver TO-1 requiring drilling and tapping the barrel band, or a BSquare rear sight replacement mount. This mount gives you a scout sight style mount, as the rear sight is forward of the reciever. If you have a #4 Enfield, there are more options ( B Square, ATI). Good luck!

S&K Scope Mounts has instamounts that require NO DRILLINGor TAPPING. Called an Instamount. They are about $100 after exchange and shipping. The pics shown do look decent.

Keep in mind if you use a scope mount that replaces the rear sight you will need a long eye relief (pistol) scope. The good old Tasco/Bushnell/Weaver 3-9 won't work very well at that distance. B-Square does make a no machine mount for the No 1 action, but I have had mixed results with them. Very difficult to get tight and straight, depending on where the rifle was originally built. If you dig around a little, you might find a cut down No 1 or No 4 that is already drilled and tapped for not too much money. Good luck, and happy hunting to the "young lad".

I agree, find one that's already drilled and tapped, shouldn't be over $175 including the scope.

Since it's pre-drilled, I'd simply drop by a gunsmith's shop and see if he has a mount that would fit, that would save you time and trouble probably.

Have fun shooting with this old lady,

Lou
